COMPANY DESCRIPTION
Instituto Health Science Career Academy along with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child-in every school and every neighborhood—has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school college- and career-ready. In alignment with CPS/ISBE, our school strives to provide high quality and specially designed instructional supports and services for all students with disabilities within the least restrictive environment. We work collaboratively with the goal of improving the academic achievement of all students with disabilities by ensuring they receive meaningful and relevant access to grade level core instruction within the school. Teachers provide appropriate, effective, and culturally relevant instruction for grades 9-12 aligned to SAT, AVID College Readiness, and state standards. IHSCA ensures that students are provided a safe learning environment that supports student social-emotional growth as well as academics.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The School Counselor consults/collaborates with various internal and external stakeholders that include but are not limited to: students, parents, administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, other related service providers, and community service agencies regarding prevention activities and intervention strategies that enhance student outcomes. The School counselors provide critical services to students at IHSCA in three domains: Academic, College & Career, and Social-Emotional. A comprehensive school counseling program is guided by standards and competencies for both students and staff: School counselors work to maximize student success, promoting access and equity for all students. As vital members of the school leadership team, school counselors create a school culture of success for all.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conducting comprehensive guidance evaluations with individual students to determine their unique strengths and weaknesses (behavioral, cognitive, emotional, academic, adaptive, personality)
  • Transcript review which also includes, new enrollees
  • Graduation On-Track – Develop 4 Year Plans
  • Assist with coordination and implementation of State and Local Testing
  • Schedule students based on program requirements and MTSS evaluations
  • Promoting school-wide practices to promote learning and positive school climate
  • Consulting about MTSS efforts using researched-based interventions
  • Suggesting academic/learning interventions and differentiated instructional supports
  • Providing social/emotional, mental, and behavioral health interventions for students with disabilities as well as their non-disabled peers.
  • Identifying at-risk students and school vulnerabilities
  • Providing crisis response, recovery, and prevention services
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • Consulting and collaborating with parents, school staff, and community service providers
  • Assisting with the development of IEP’s and 504 Plans for diverse learners
  • Screening the learning environments of students
  • Support in developing and implementing MTSS/SEL in effort to implement and progress monitor appropriate interventions for students.
  • Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems
  • Help students process their problems and plan goals and action
  • Mediate conflict between students and teachers
  • Improve parent/teacher relationships
  • Assist with college applications, jobs and scholarships
  • Facilitate drug and alcohol prevention programs
  • Organize peer counseling programs
  • Refer students to psychologists and other mental health resources
  • Work on academic boards to improve learning conditions
  • Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after-school activities.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in School or Educational Counseling
  • PEL IL Type 73 certificate
  • PEL IL Type 75 (preferred)
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a High School Educational setting
  • DL/EL Endorsements (preferred)
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires the ability to collect and compile work documents, as well as exchange information. Approximately half of the time on the job will be spent standing. Lifting of objects weighing less than 30 pounds may be required. Due to the nature of the subject matter, the teacher may be exposed to various chemicals.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours may be required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
