Institute for Systems Biology is Hiring an IT Director Near Seattle, WA

The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is an internationally renowned non-profit research institute dedicated to the study and application of systems biology. We are seeking an IT Director to lead a stellar team of professionals and to provide strategic oversight of the department. This includes responsibility for all IT operations including planning, procurement, systems, servers, network and telephones, end user support, high performance computing, AV, and research and enterprise computing.

Essential Duties:

  • Analyzes, plans, develops, implements and maintains the computing systems for the Institute
  • Analyzes complex business needs presented by the user community and recommends technical solutions
  • Collaborates with Institute faculty, senior research staff and administrative directors to develop IT requirements
  • Directs and prioritizes the work load of help desk and systems engineers
  • Ensures the consistency and maintainability of existing applications by creating, maintaining, and enforcing standards/procedures for implementing technical solutions
  • Approves all business requirements prior to the technical solution implementation.
  • Participates in all hardware and software evaluations and maintains vendor contracts
  • Preparation and management of the information technology budget and replacement planning
  • Serves as a member of the Administrative Leadership Team and provides technology advice and analysis to assist administrative managers, faculty, and ISB’s Senior Leadership Team
  • Actively participates in the administrative leadership of ISB including attending administrative leadership meetings and Institute retreats

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Director of IT is responsible for hiring and evaluating the performance of IT staff and for their professional development.

Required Education, Skills & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Five (5) or more years of progressively high level IT experience in a leadership role
  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant IT industry standards and best practices
  • Demonstrated personnel management experience
  • Effective communication in different avenues including presentations to large and diverse groups
  • Policy creation, proposal, feedback, and implementation
  • Demonstrated competence in budget management
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population and range of personalities
  • Strong client service orientation.
  • A high degree of professional integrity
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of complex organizational issues.

All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a scientific, non-profit, and/or academic environment

Physical Demands:

Position is in a typical office environment with no adverse environmental conditions expected. Regularly requires sitting for extended periods. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Frequently required to communicate with others using voice and hearing to exchange information. Regularly requires repeating motions that may include hands, wrist, or fingers (e.g. using a computer keyboard and mouse). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Work location may be on-site in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, or hybrid. Free parking and/or ORCA pass provided.

Pay Range: $125,520-$225,940
