Job Description: Fitness Coordinator

Reports To: Community Wellness & Outreach (CWO) Program Manager

Status Full-Time Regular, Non-exempt

Position Summary: Under direct supervision of the Community Wellness and Outreach (CWO) Director, the Fitness Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating fitness program activities, in accordance with health promotion and disease prevention programs, for the Indian Health Center (IHC) client population.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Instruct individuals in perceptual motor development, aerobics, stretching, weight training and yoga
  • If needed, provide home visiting services
  • Oversee group fitness classes 
  • Develop, implement and evaluate fitness classes and activities
  • Oversee the development of annual fitness program objectives and policies and procedures
  • Develop and facilitate ongoing member retention strategies
  • Design, implement and monitor exercise program for special populations (i.e. elders, youth, individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities, post rehabilitations)
  • Maintain client exercise records
  • Oversee fitness program inventory, assure appropriate ordering of supplies and equipment
  • Incorporate and utilize empowerment and capacity building strategies to promote health and wellness
  • Utilize the eCW and Access systems to document daily work activities and monitor patients’ progress
  • Utilize eCW to monitor referrals 
  • Ensure a safe, clean and congenial environment for fitness program participants
  • Produce and submit weekly and/or monthly activity reports to CWO Director
  • Participate in outreach and tabling events
  • Maintain a relationship with other IHC departments to ensure program consistency and high standards
  • Contribute fitness expertise to special IHC projects
  • Supervise, evaluate and train fitness center staff, volunteers, and student interns
  • Ensure equipment is used in a proper manner and adhere to the equipment maintenance schedule
  • Participate in CWO outreach events, including powwows, health and resource fairs and community gatherings
  • Act as a liaison between IHC, Indian agencies and organizations, and other community agencies; develop and maintain linkages to facilitate the identification and referral of AI’s into IHC
  • Maintain strictest confidentiality, except when mandated reporting is required
  • Follow all HIPAA guidelines and requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, health sciences or related field and minimum of two years of related experience or a Masters degree in a health related field, and experience in teaching and instructing physical activity to special populations 
  • Certification in group exercise/personal training
  • Special interest/experience in delivering services to American Indian/Alaskan Natives
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with the American Indian community and other minority populations
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain professional relationships with outside agencies
  • Able to read, write and speak English fluently 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Flexibility, initiative, creativity and reliability
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Possession of good organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as good teamwork skills
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, automobile insurance and a clean driving record

Physical Requirements

  • Will be working in a fast paced non-profit community health clinic environment and must be able to:
    • sit, stand and walk for extensive periods of time;
    • lift up to 35 pounds; and
    • stoop, squat, or bend frequently
  • Possess the manual and finger dexterity as well as the eye-hand coordination sufficient to accomplish the duties associated with your job description
  • Ability to visually observe as well as hear and communicate with patients and professional staff
  • Ability to do extensive work on the computer and the telephone in communicating with staff, patients, and vendors

Working Conditions:

  • Potential exposure to airborne and blood borne infectious diseases and pathogens
  •  Normal working hours will be from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm although hours may vary depending upon business need
  • Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines while also being an effective leader and collaborating with the agency-wide management team
