Job Title: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

Job Goal:

  • To direct and assist district staff and administrators with all areas of special services for students and ensure adherence with national, state, and local Special Education program requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meets certification requirements of the State of Delaware for an administrator and Special Education Teacher
  • Hold or be eligible for State of Delaware Director of Special Education certification
  • Possesses five years of successful building-level and/or district-level administrative experience
  • Possesses five years of successful Special Education experience
  • Criminal Background Check, TB Test, and Child Protection Registry Clearance must be completed prior to start of employment

Reports To: Superintendent

Primary Duties:

  • Supervises the Supervisor of Special Education, Supervisor of Support Services, Supervisor of Early Learning, Special Services Secretary, and Related Services Staff
  • Describes, explains, and interprets Special Education philosophy, programs and curriculum to teachers, principals, and parents
  • Develops and monitors budgets in an effective manner for the district’s Special Education programs and Special Services
  • Develops and maintains procedures to identify, process, place, and dismiss eligible students in and out of appropriate programs
  • Addresses legal matters related to Special Education Services
  • Manages external vendors to provide support services to Special Education students
  • Monitors Special Education classroom instruction
  • Develops and maintains strategies for articulation between school levels
  • Assists in the development, implementation, promotion and review of access to general education curriculum from early childhood to secondary Special Education programs
  • Assists in planning and implementing staff development programs for employees
  • Supports staff in ensuring standards-based instruction in Special Education classrooms
  • Guides Special Education Teachers in aligning curricula with standards
  • Serves as the Special Education liaison with the Department of Education
  • Monitors student records, as required
  • Represents the school district in an ethical and professional manner at all times
  • Approves special program placement recommendations in collaboration with school IEP teams
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of the Indian River School District as established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.
  • Performs other assigned duties

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent
