JOB GOAL: To assist district staff and administrators with national, state, and local special education program requirements.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Meets the certification requirements of the State of Delaware for a Special Education Teacher and School Administrator.
2. Possesses five years of successful teaching in Special Education or as a Special Education Coordinator.
3. Possesses tact to deal amicably and effectively with district personnel, parents, and students.
4. Demonstrates initiative, sound practical judgment and the courage to resolve problems and make decisions.
5. Strong interpersonal communication skills

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports the Director of Special Education in the following areas:

  • Describes, explains, and interprets Special Education philosophy, programs, and curriculum to teachers, principals, and parents.
  • Develops and monitors budgets in an effective manner for the district’s Special Education programs.
  • Develops and maintains procedures to identify, process, place, and dismiss eligible students in an out of appropriate programs.
  • Monitors special education classroom instruction.
  • Develops and maintains strategies for articulation between school levels.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, promotion and review of access to general education curriculum from early childhood to secondary Special Education programs.
  • Assists in planning and implementing staff development programs for Special Education employees.
  • Assists classroom teachers in transitioning to inclusive classrooms.
  • Demonstrates standards-based instruction in Special Education classrooms.
  • Guides Special Education Teachers in aligning curricula with standards.
  • Provides programmatic technical assistance to Howard T. Ennis programs.
  • Serves as the Special Education liaison with Department of Education.
  • Supervises department specialists, school psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, and other related services staff and related services contractors in collaboration with building administrators.
  • Organizes and monitors the Special Education component of the extended school year and 12-month programs.
  • Provides support for school-based Special Education coordinators.
  • Develops and presents professional development opportunities for Special Education coordinators, case managers, related service providers and any district-wide needs
  • Monitors student records as required.
  • Represents the school district in an ethical and professional manner at all times.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of the Indian River School District as established by the Board of Education and the Superintendent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Special Education.
