The Student Peer Supports promote mental health and support Illinois Central College students living with mental health conditions by meeting with students individually and in groups, assisting the counselors with outreach on campus, and giving presentations about mental health and wellness. Peer supports serve as an active listener and assist students with goal-setting, managing distress, and general wellness. Peer supports will work under supervision of the Peer Support Counselor.
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours to be eligible for student employment opportunities during Fall and Spring semesters. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours to be eligible for student employment opportunities during Summer semesters.

Provide individual student appointments on a drop-in or pre-scheduled basis; appointments may focus on active listening to students in distress, helping students access campus resources, and supporting students with goal setting
Serve as a positive role model on campus as an advocate for mental health and wellness
Attend scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and supervision with Peer Support Counselor
Develop and lead presentations on mental health and wellness-related topics
Document student interactions and maintain confidentiality of all shared information
Assist the Counseling Center with outreach and programming events on campus
Connect students with resources on Illinois Central College’s campus
Follow ICC Counseling Center’s policies and procedures
Perform related duties as assigned/required
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours at ICC during the semester of employment for fall or spring or enrolled in 3 credit hours for summer employment
Ability to attend required training prior to starting work as a Peer Support and commitment to ongoing supervision and meetings for purpose of continuing education
Commitment to promoting wellness and mental health on ICC’s campus
Organizational and time management skills to maintain role as a student and peer support
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to be a leader
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Completion of NASPA Certified Peer Educator program by assigned deadline
Experience in a support or customer service role
Understanding of mental health and stressors college students are facing
Experience with presentations
