ILISAGVIK COLLEGE is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near Utqiaġvik, AK

REPORTS TO: Controller

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 8:30pm - 5:00pm

COMPENSATION: $83,934.09/year DOE Benefits, Exempt Position

SUMMARY OF POSITION: 

Under the guidance of the Controller, oversee the daily operations of the Business Division, maintain effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance of the Business and Grant Management Offices grounded in timeliness and accuracy, keep the general ledger balanced, reconciled, and maintain records, and assist with back-up duties where necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and evaluate Business Office and Grant Management staff to ensure accuracy of department output and performance. Provide staff with the necessary guidance and training to fulfill their job responsibilities.
  • Controls time and attendance and recommends performance management action where appropriate.
  • Assist with general accounting and related activities; accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting functions. Cover the primary functions of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll if and when primary staff and backup staff are absent.
  • Responsible for ensuring accuracy of aging reports and customer/vendor statements.
  • Oversee the monthly reconciliation of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll to the general ledger. Prepares, verifies, and controls journal entries to the general ledger.
  • Ensures reconciliation of monthly bank statements.
  • Apply established Business Office policies and procedures; Direct and/or assists in the performance of tasks when necessary (i.e., Unusual problems or questions, explaining procedures to new employees
  • Trains new personnel and provides technical assistance to other departments.
  • Responsible for writing and updating accounting procedures for all business services group functions (P/R, A/P, etc.)
  • Assist the Controller with coordination and preparation of annual financial audit by providing auditors with information to comply with year-end audit requirements.
  • Maintain current understanding of local, state and federal regulations regarding payroll issues.
  • Ensure the proper filing of quarterly and annual payroll and ACA reports.
  • Comply with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated PC proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet extremely tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
  • Experience with Great Plains accounting software; Demonstrated knowledge of accounting concepts, techniques and principles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Business Applications
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to travel periodically.
  • Demonstrated stable employment history.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
  • Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.
  • Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Required]:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent in Accounting.
  • Minimum of three years of accounting work/business office experience.
  • Minimum of three years computerized software experience.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Preferred]:

  • Six years of accounting/business experience
  • Valid driver’s license.

Health Insurance- Iḷisaġvik College is self-insured and Meritain Health is the health insurance third party administrator. Iḷisaġvik College offers health insurance to our employees with a no cost premium, and $50/month for each additional dependent and a low cost annual deductible of $200 for employee only and $600 for family.

Life Insurance- Iḷisaġvik College offers Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage through Guardian Life to employees at no cost to the employee in the amount of $100,000/per benefit.
