ICIC is Hiring a Development Manager Near Boston, MA

Organization Overview:

The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a national not-for-profit organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter to drive inclusive economic prosperity in under-resourced communities through innovative research and programs to create jobs, income, and wealth for local residents. Informed by our research, ICIC has developed and supported highly effective initiatives for underserved businesses to meet entrepreneurs’ most pressing needs. At ICIC, you will work with talented, creative, and committed professionals in a collaborative culture dedicated to excellence and innovation.

Position Description:

The Development Manager is responsible for leading individual giving efforts for ICIC. Day-to-day responsibilities include identifying and qualifying potential individual donors (including from ICIC’s program alumni) as well as creating and implementing outreach strategies for them. In addition, the development manager will lead donor stewardship and renewal activities for our existing portfolio of individual contributors. The development manager will craft and execute annual small dollar donor campaigns for individuals and program alumni, as well as completing other ad hoc projects as needed. The manager will have a high degree of comfort and facility with data management and will ensure donor data is captured accurately, comprehensively, and with discretion. This position reports to the Director of Development and works closely with ICIC’s CEO and management team.

Collectively, the development team is responsible for securing approximately $8M in annual funding from corporate, foundation, and individual sources. ICIC is a growing organization with ambitious goals for which additional financial support is required. Our current individual giving portfolio is comprised of ~70 donors who contribute ~$1M annually to ICIC.

Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy (~20%)

  • Partner with development and communications team members to develop multi-channel strategies designed to grow and diversify donor-base as well as engage and retain existing donors.
  • Secure commitments (including multi-year) at the four-, five-, and six-figure levels from existing and new donors, both individually and in collaboration with ICIC leadership.
  • Maintain ICIC programmatic and research knowledge to develop and deploy effective outreach and stewardship strategies.
  • Engage in professional development activities to understand and react to philanthropic and donor trends and effectively incorporate these into strategies and planning.
  • In partnership with communications, development, and ICAN teams, lead the creation and deployment of ICIC’s annual small dollar fundraising campaign targeting program alumni.

Current Donor Management and Stewardship (~30%)

  • Working with ICIC’s CEO and Director of Development, manage the outreach, renewal solicitation, and stewardship of existing individual donors (~70 donors collectively contributing ~$1,000,000 annually), ensuring an outstanding philanthropic experience.
  • Work collaboratively with ICIC leadership to prepare for, document, and complete diligent follow up for meetings with individual and alumni donors.
  • Secure renewals and new commitments from ICIC’s alumni donor community, including designing and completing appropriate recognition activities.

New Donor Identification and Cultivation (~30%)

  • Work closely with the CEO, Director of Development, and ICAN team to identify new alumni donor prospects with the goal of increasing the number of ICAN donors by 25% annually.
  • Identify high-potential prospects for inclusion in the major gifts pipeline (non-alumni).
  • Personally manage a portfolio of 50 donor prospects (including alumni and other major donors), including conducting primary research, creating individualized donor strategies, developing and cultivating meaningful relationships, and making direct solicitations.

Data Management and Analysis (~20%)

  • Oversee the maintenance of the Development-related Salesforce CRM reports, dashboards, campaigns, etc. to ensure accuracy and update the system as needed.
  • Leverage Salesforce data to track performance towards revenue goals, as well as track prospective donors through the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship stages.
  • Synthesize and analyze giving data to identify and draw on trends that will inform strategies. Regularly evaluate ongoing fundraising ROI and ways in which it can be improved.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate is a highly organized self-starter with robust experience in the nonprofit sector, ideally in managing a growing individual giving program. This candidate is inspired by the work that we do at ICIC and passionate about driving inclusive economic prosperity and supporting under-resourced communities and small businesses.

The ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relevant experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a preference for individual giving, major gifts, and/or annual fund roles.
  • Previous management experience (1-2 years) preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and a CRM or fundraising platform is required; direct experience with Salesforce and advanced CRM knowledge strongly preferred.
  • Experience building and maintaining positive relationships with donors and partners.
  • Ability to learn, create, monitor, and maintain systems that enhance organizational and departmental efficiency.
  • Strong attention to detail, as well as analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite and online meeting and communications platforms such as Zoom and Slack.
  • Collaborative, solutions-oriented, and excited to work with other team members and departments.
  • Experience leading projects and small teams.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and remain flexible with changing priorities.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

In addition to a passion for the work we do, candidates should have:

  • A demonstrated capacity for teamwork
  • Ability to think beyond the task at hand and take initiative
  • Willingness to challenge and be challenged, regardless of one’s position in the organization
