Job Description:

KIND OF WORK: Under general supervision, performs skilled work locating and reading electric and water meters, removes dirt from water meter boxes, and other laboring duties as assigned. May be required to assist in locating, installation, removal, testing, and repairing of electric and water meters and associated ancillary related equipment.EXAMPLES OF WORK: Reads electric and water meters and enters readings, conditions, and exception codes into hand-held field computers, noting irregularities pertaining to services such as dead meters, illegal use of electricity or water, incorrect rates, leaks, unsafe conditions and illegal installations. Responds to customer questions in regard to electric and water services, meter readings and consumption. Removes grass and dirt from water meter boxes in order to obtain meter readings. Performs duties at Service Centres, support areas or other location as assigned. Will be required to maintain tools and equipment, including vehicles, in a clean and neat condition. Operates a Client vehicle and performs routine maintenance checks on assigned vehicle daily. Will be required to work in inclement weather. Performs related duties as required.KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITES:Knowledge:• Working knowledge of Client rules and regulations as they pertain to water and current diversion, water and electric consumption, using current without a contract, and all other customer related policies and procedures.• Basic working knowledge of the methods of electric and water distribution and construction and operations of various metering devices• Knowledge of basic mathematics.• Knowledge of general maintenance of vehicles.Skills:• Accuracy, mental alertness and motor coordination required.• Will be required to operate and maintain a client vehicleAbilities:• Accurately read meters, transfer numbers accurately, and writes legibly.• Enter sensitive meter billing data obtained into hand-held field computer.• Identify and detect irregularities, broken seals, upside down electric meters, etc.• Communicate with the public tactfully and courteously.• Follow oral and written instructions.• Work without direct supervision.• Ability to use city maps and street guides.• Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals, including calculation of percentages.• Handle and manoeuvre 30lb. metal water meter covers to determine consumption usage.• Walk distances up to 10 miles per day• Work outside in the elements for eight (8) hours a day.• Physical requirements include repetitive bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and kneeling and lifting.• Ability to hear sounds signalling any potential hazardsOPEN REQUIREMENTS: High School graduate or GED equivalent, Ability to read, write & speak English. Must have corrected vision of at least 20/40. Valid Florida Driver’s License is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
