POSITION DESCRIPTION

HGL has a current opening for a mid-level Geologist/Hydrogeologist in the Bay Area/Oakland, CA. This position will support multi-year U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers environmental projects primarily in the Western U.S. area. Projects commonly involve investigation and remediation of sites with groundwater and soil impacted by emerging contaminants (PFAS), chlorinated solvents, and petroleum compounds as well as abandoned mine lands.

Responsibilities/Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

The person hired for this role will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring field operations are conducted in a safe manner in accordance with project specific Site Safety and Health Plans / Health and Safety Plans.
  • Serving as Field team leader for environmental investigation and remediation projects;
  • Conducting field subcontractor oversight inclusive of drilling, monitoring well construction, waste transportation and disposal, and heavy equipment operation.
  • Collecting environmental samples from environmental media, including soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment;
  • Preparing work plans and project deliverables (e.g., UFP-QAPPs, FSPs, RI/FS Reports, SSHP/HASPs, technical memoranda).
  • Providing data management support;
  • Developing data tables and figures for reports;
  • Developing boring logs and review/interpretation of geological boring logs.

In addition, the candidate will be responsible for office work under the direction of individual project managers. Must be a team-oriented person willing to conduct a variety of field assignments and write cohesive report sections on the evaluation of investigative and remediation results. This position has the potential for up to 30% travel within the U.S. (predominantly in western and midwestern U.S.) as needed to support projects.

Required Skills

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

The ideal candidate will need the following as a foundation for success in this role:

  • Knowledge of environmental investigations and remediation projects regulated by RCRA and CERCLA;
  • Ability to execute multiple tasks concurrently as a field team leader;
  • Experience working under quality assurance/quality control programs under federal contracts;
  • 6 years experience providing oversight of soil boring and well installations utilizing various drilling methods;
  • Experience with preparation of field work plans and reports;
  • Experience with performing collection of water, soil, soil vapor, surface water and sediment samples utilizing various sampling techniques;
  • Proficient in MS Office;
  • B.S. Degree in Geology with professional registration in at least one state.

WHAT YOU NEED TO STAND OUT

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with DoD or USEPA projects.
  • PFAS sampling and remediation experience.
