Hutchinson Community College is Hiring a Music Instructor - Jazz Program Coordinator (FAC2935) Near Hutchinson, KS

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions –

  • Teach music related courses (such as Music Appreciation, Intro to Jazz, Piano, Aural Skills, and Music Theory) and Applied Music (music majors only). Assignments may include teaching evening courses or via alternative delivery systems, such as online.
  • Conduct instrumental jazz ensembles and combos; present a minimum of two public concerts per academic year.
  • Collaborate with other departments to teach music technology courses (including Music for the Recording Studio and Music Technology)
  • Coordinate instrumental jazz activities such as concerts (on- or off-campus), touring possibilities, clinics, festivals, workshops and/or master classes.
  • Recruit students for music and other fine arts programs and make scholarship awards to music majors and students involved in the jazz ensembles and combos within published deadlines.
  • Foster positive professional relationships with area high school music program directors/faculty and with community members to support HutchCC music programs.
  • Communicate/maintain jazz patron/donor relationships for the purpose of raising scholarship funds for Jazz and music programs.
  • Collaborate with other faculty in the department on classes, concerts, trips, workshops, recruiting, clinics, and performances.
  • Consult with the theatre program on a musical each school year. Duties may include conducting, providing musicians, and rehearsing the music.
  • Plan, implement, and sponsor appropriate activities to supplement instruction.
  • Assist in selecting textbooks, developing/revising/updating curricula, completing reports, tracking, and entering assessment data.
  • Maintain evaluation and attendance records as requested by the department and/or Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Maintain skills in teaching methods and course development as recommended by HutchCC.
  • Participate, as possible, in faculty development activities at the college and within state and regional organizations.
  • Maintain records and files as requested by the department and/or Vice President of Academic Affairs.
  • Maintain confidentiality in a student-centered environment.
  • Incorporate study skills, adult learning theory, and teaching/learning strategies to improve student persistence and retention.
  • Arrive on time for work, attend work regularly, and successfully complete the responsibilities of the position.
  • Comply with HutchCC policies, procedures, and practices.

Secondary –

  • Additional responsibilities may include recommendation of upgrades for music technology, online development, and curriculum development.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with staff, students, faculty, and other HutchCC stakeholders.
  • May advise prospective and enrolled students in the appropriate curricula.
  • Serve actively on institutional committees.
  • May mentor honors students.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the appropriate Department Chairperson or the Vice-President of Academic Affairs or as specified in the local Master Agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in music required. Preference will be given to those candidates with graduate studies in the jazz genre.
  • Ability to teach applied music for brass preferred.
  • Experience with music recording technology preferred.
  • Evidence of effective music teaching experience at the collegiate level preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in conducting, coordination of a jazz program, and recruitment at a college level preferred.
  • Brass or percussion emphasis and performing experience preferred.
  • Develop and maintain effective professional relationships with area music directors, donors, fine arts colleagues, administration, and peers.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, gender and disabilities populations.
  • Follow written and oral instructions accurately, be attentive to detail, and work independently.
  • Collaborate and possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Physical requirements include excellent written, verbal and listening communication skills; ability to understand words and respond effectively and appropriately; visual acuity to view a computer terminal; use appropriate judgment and apply tact and courtesy in difficult situations; light/indoor work environment.
  • Mental requirements include the ability to learn/comprehend basic instructions about the position.

SALARY and STATUS:

The salary is determined per the 2024-2025 Hiring Salary Schedule in the local HutchCC Master Agreement. This full-time faculty position is a nine-month annual based on contract renewal, 170 work days per contract period, 15 extra days for recruitment, due process rights eligible, benefit eligible, and exempt. Total number of days worked per contract period: 170 (170 15 additional days = 185 total work days) – Annual contract dates: August 1 through May 31. This position will begin Fall semester, 2024.

HutchCC CSA Job Description Addendum:

  • Satisfy the duties of a Campus Security Authority (CSA) relating to Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (“Clery Act”) by:
    • Promptly reporting Clery Act crimes and/or allegations of Clery Act crimes to the designated HutchCC official(s) in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures;
    • Completing any HutchCC provided CSA training regarding campus safety and crime reporting issues;
    • Assisting in the issuance of timely warnings and emergency notifications in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures;
    • Serving as a resource to students, employees, and others regarding crime prevention, reporting and victim assistance; and
    • Collaborating with the Coordinator of Campus Safety, the Coordinator of Equity & Compliance, and the Director of Human Resources, regarding campus safety and compliance issues.
    • A professional counselor, as designated by HutchCC and whose official responsibilities include providing mental health counseling to members of the HutchCC community, may be exempt from reporting Clery Act crimes and/or allegations of Clery Act crimes when functioning within the scope of the counselor’s license or certification.
