Humane Society of North Texas is Hiring a Barn Manager Near Joshua, TX

Looking for a qualified Barn Manager to oversee the daily care, wellness and maintenance of all livestock.

The Barn Manager role is a working position that will supervise and work alongside the barn attendant, other staff and volunteers to make sure all aspects of the daily chores are accomplished.

We are a Natural Horsemanship practicing barn and expect kind and humane care of the horses.

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Managing the Barn Attendant by assigning tasks and following up that tasks are completed according to HSNT protocols.
  • Establishing nutritional programs for each animal which includes setting feed schedules and feeding appropriate diet and amount.
  • Identify and report health and behavior issues to the Director of Equine & Livestock.
  • Complete treatments for health issues as directed by a Veterinarian or the Director of Equine & Livestock.
  • Manage paddocks by moving horses and livestock to the appropriate areas.
  • Schedule Veterinarian and Farrier appointments, as necessary. 
  • Manages barn cleanliness with Barn Attendant by ensuring stalls are mucked and water troughs are clean.
  • Monitor inventory of feed, shavings, medical and other barn supplies; place orders and pick up supplies, as needed.
  • Keeps all vehicles filled with gas and works with the Director of Equine & Livestock and Maintenance Manager to ensure vehicles are properly maintained; ready to go on a moment's notice.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others (including co-workers and customers) by sharing ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas in a constructive and positive manner; listening to and objectively considering ideas and suggestions from others; keeping commitments; keeping others informed of work progress, timetables and issues; and addressing problems and issues constructively to find mutually acceptable and practical business solutions.
  • The Barn Manager will oversee volunteers working in the barn or facilities by ensuring they are following HSNT policies and procedures including safety.
  • Assist the cruelty investigations department with seizures by determining the temperament and hauling capability of equines or livestock, as requested by the Director of Equine & Livestock.
  • Enter data/notes on care, medical and behavior for each animal in the animal management system along with relevant emails and spreadsheets.
  • Represent the Humane Society of North Texas by providing excellent customer service to customers, vendors and volunteers.
  • Protect the confidential information on customer and donors.
  • Additional tasks as assigned by the Director of Equine & Livestock.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position

  • 4 years steady equine experience
  • Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in an animal field preferred
  • Must be insurable on the HSNT vehicle insurance policy
  • Knowledge of Natural Horsemanship philosophy in caring and training horses
  • Ability to saddle and ride a horse confidently
  • Must possess skills to drive a vehicle pulling horse trailers (bumper and gooseneck styles)
  • Trailer loading of animals and trailer unloading, safety is crucial to this position
  • Knowledge of Humane Society of North Texas policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to , adoption, cleaning and medical protocols
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior
  • Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness
  • Ability to represent the Humane Society of North Texas in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, vendors and staff
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Humane Society of North Texas, with volunteers, the public, vendors and be a team player
  • Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions
  • Must demonstrate initiative and flexibility in constantly changing work demands
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively

Required Professional Licensing or Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver's License

Working Conditions

  • The individual performing this job may be required to work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week. Weekend work will be necessary
