Hughes Fire Equipment, Inc. Portland facility is currently accepting resumes for the position of Entry Level Fire Apparatus Mechanic. Some general information about the position is listed below. Resumes will be accepted immediately.

Under the direction of the Shop Foreman, you will perform specialized and skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of a variety of fire and emergency apparatus.


Summary of Job Description:

Participates in the mechanical repair of fire apparatus equipment, including rebuilding or repair of pumps, valves and other fire related equipment; diagnose customer’s complaints and perform corrective actions. Ability to diagnose defects, perform mechanical repairs with minimum of supervision. The applicant will be trained to conduct pump tests, aerial inspections and annual inspections. Must be 18 years of age or older by the time of employment.


Essential Functions:

  • Completes apparatus inspections and performs specialized, journey-level mechanical maintenance and repair work on all types of complex firefighting apparatus and related equipment which include but are not limited to ladder, engine, ARFF, air/light, rehabilitation, hazardous materials, brush trucks and command van type apparatus.
  • Review apparatus maintenance work orders communicating with the Shop Foreman. Uses manual techniques or computerized systems to diagnose operational problems on all types of firefighting apparatus and heavy equipment; diagnosing problems with a variety of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on firefighting apparatus.
  • Communicates with coworkers, supervisors and department personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicates with Lead and or Shop Foreman regarding apparatus and equipment performance.
  • Reviews repair work to be completed with the Lead, Supervisor or Service writer.
  • Prepares accurate work detail description of maintenance and repairs preformed.
  • Modifies, welds, fabricates parts such as equipment and tool mounts, brackets and shelving.
  • Performance annual pump testing as per NFPA standards.


Basic/Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • The applicant may possess any combination of relevant education and experience, which would demonstrate the individual's knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.
  • Must pass the pre-employment – The ability to pass randomized quarterly alcohol and drug screenings as well
  • Must successfully pass the pre-employment driver's record check
  • Must possess a valid Oregon State Driver's License
  • Must obtain CDL within the first 3 months of employment


Continuing Education:

The applicant will be required to acquire EVT and ASE certifications. This will be achieved by taking classes and passing the required tests. The timelines for the appropriate certifications are as follows:* Fire Apparatus Technician Level 1 after three (3) years of employment* Fire Apparatus Technician Level 2 after four (4) years of employment* Fire Apparatus Technician Level 3 after six (6) years of employment.


Distinguishing Features:

  • An Equipment Mechanic can be subject to on-call assignments when off duty and may be expected to work flexible hours involving shift work or weekends.
  • Direction is received from the Lead Mechanic, Shop Foreman and or Service Manager.
  • This position will also be subject at times to overnight assignment.


Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand and walk over 50% of work time. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
