Position: Lower School Spanish Teacher
Location: 422 Willow Avenue, Hoboken
Status: Part-Time, 10-20 hours per week
Start Date: August 22, 2024

Under the supervision of the Lower School Head, a Spanish teacher at The Hudson School works to promote the school’s mission with students in the lower school.

Recognizing the invaluable cognitive and social-emotional benefits of multilingualism, the lower school world language program at The Hudson School seeks to create a joyful environment for learning languages. Through interactive, interdisciplinary and collaborative experiences with languages, students are offered opportunities to kindle:

  • Curiosity about people and culture in a complex world
  • Communication skills and expression of thoughts and ideas in new ways
  • Confidence and a sense of empowerment to take intellectual risks and experiment with language

Essential Qualities

Teacher knowledge and skills work together with teacher dispositions (which include values, attitudes, aspirations, motivation) to promote positive outcomes in the life of each student. The work of any teacher or specialist at The Hudson School is to grow and demonstrate the following characteristics that lead to effective teaching and ultimately student development, growth and achievement: professional knowledge (a working understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach is preferred), instructional planning and delivery (including a working understanding of Understanding by Design), assessment, learning environment (Responsive Classroom training is a plus), and professionalism.

Specialist Teacher Additional Responsibilities

Evaluation/Professional Growth
  • Teachers participate in a cycle of evaluation that is outlined in the handbook.
  • Teachers will participate in professional development sessions as determined in collaboration with school leadership
  • Teachers may be required to participate in courses in Abuse Prevention, First Aid, CPR, and/or medical administration at the expense of the school and as requested by the school

Qualifications

The Hudson School teachers will generally have at least the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in world language or elementary education or a related field from an accredited college or university acquired or in progress or equivalent experience
  • A working knowledge of the CI (Comprehensible Input) approach and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) model; experience teaching with these is preferred
  • Have a deep interest in children and ability to connect with them
  • Native Spanish speaker
  • Be able to clearly communicate verbally and in writing in English
  • Be able to collaborate with others in an open way
  • Be able to work both indoors and outdoors
  • Be able to bend or kneel to facilitate communication with young children, climb multiple flights of stairs while supervising children, and maintain a high level of activity while supervising children
  • Treat all members of The Hudson School community with respect and civility
  • Upon employment, be able to pass criminal background checks

Salary Range: 15-35k annually, based on 10-20 hours per week, dependent on additional duties.
