FMDT offers cost effective Trustee and trust management services with a personal touch, designed to enhance the quality of life of our beneficiaries while protecting their eligibility for public benefits.

The Trust Officer:
The Trust Officer will manage a broad portfolio of special needs trusts, and work closely with trust beneficiaries, family members, and other parties to ensure funds are administered properly and legally.

A Typical Day May Look Like This:

  • Meet with prospective clients, their families and/or counsel to explain our trust management services.
  • Communicate via phone, email, letters and in person with clients and their guardians about the special needs trust and the client’s needs.
  • Assist with completing Trust Agreements and Joinder Agreements and obtain all required documentation.
  • Manage assigned special needs trusts and administer them in accordance with the legal purpose and documents.
  • Work with advocates, federal, state, and local governmental agencies, medical professionals, attorneys, accountants, family members, contractors, etc., as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Trust Administration team to ensure client’s needs are met and policies and procedures are designed to best serve our clients.
  • Manage discretionary distributions for clients.
  • Collaborate with the Trust Administration team to inform prospective beneficiaries and their families and advocates about trust administration services offered by FMDT. 
  • Note: The Trust Officer is not responsible for developing new trust business or investing funds on behalf of clients.

This position reports to the staff attorney.
What We're Looking For:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in legal/paralegal studies, business, or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong knowledge of fiduciary law; trust accounting/reporting; and basic tax implications
  • A commitment to our mission to serve the disability community
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to cultivate and maintain positive and productive relationships with trust beneficiaries and their families and advocates
  • Strong organizational, time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills

It’d Be Great If You Have:

  • Previous experience in Trust administration; however, we’re willing to train the right candidate with a strong interest in Trust Administration.
  • Knowledge of public benefit programs such as SSA, SSI, SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid and waiver programs in the context of their support for trust beneficiaries
  • Knowledge of estate administration and guardianships
  • Intermediate proficiency with trust administration software/technology tools; Excel; Outlook; and Word.

This position works on-site Monday through Thursday in our office in Lutherville-Timonium. Our team works remotely every Friday. Flexibility for remote work is available on an as-needed basis, as well.
