We have an outstanding opportunity for an experienced Laboratory Manager to join the Vosshall lab at Rockefeller University in New York City. Led by Dr. Leslie Vosshall, HHMI's Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, the lab is interested in the molecular neurobiology of mosquito host-seeking behavior. Mosquitoes require a blood meal to complete egg development, and in carrying out this innate behavior, they spread dangerous viruses including dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and yellow fever. The lab has developed CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing in theAedes aegyptimosquito with the goal of understanding how behaviors emerge from the integration of sensory input with internal physiological states. About the Laboratory Manager role:
This is a critical role where you will serve as a trusted leader of day-to-day lab operations, a mentor to junior team members, the primary liaison between the lab and external parties, and a collaborative partner to the Senior Scientist and Dr. Vosshall. What you'll do:

  • Manage day-to-day activities within the laboratory to keep everything running efficiently including operation of essential equipment, maintaining adequate stock of supplies, monitoring the lab's budget, and other operational tasks.

  • Serve as the primary liaison and "go-to person" between the lab, HHMI, Rockefeller administrative offices, health, safety, and regulatory bodies, and other external parties on various operational issues and initiatives.

  • Maintain and update laboratory guidelines, procedures, and documentation through a lens of continuous process improvement.

  • Directly supervise and mentor four research technicians.

  • Assist with onboarding, training, and mentoring new lab team members.

  • Provide general support with molecular biology techniques, mosquito rearing, tool development, and other research-related activities as needed.

What you bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, chemistry, or a closely related area is required. Applicants with advanced degrees are welcome and encouraged to apply.

  • A minimum of 5 years of prior work experience in a research laboratory setting is required.

  • Previous supervisory experience is required.

  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required.

  • Strong understanding of molecular biology techniques is preferred.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a willingness to tackle new challenges.

  • Excellent leadership, mentorship, and training skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation Range:

Lab Manager I - $78,775 (minimum) - $98,400 (midpoint) - $127,995 (maximum)

Lab Manager II - $93,725 (minimum) - $117,100 (midpoint) - $152,260 (maximum)

Pay Type: Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
