At Houston Methodist the Patient CareAssistant (PCA) Novice position is Patient Care Technician (PCT)graduate or an internal internship and is an entry level positionin which incumbents should document where applicable careadministered diagnostic measurements treatments and procedures anddemonstrate the ability to continuously progress in basic knowledgeand skills necessary to communicate appropriately and carry outdelegated tasks for agespecific diverse patient population.

Thisposition receives coaching from preceptors Registered Nurses (RN)and management and performs delegated patient care tasks under thesupervision of the RN.

The PCA Novice position responds to the calllight system and records data established by policy and procedureand reports observations and patient problems to the licensednurse.

This position is responsible for assigned nonnursingfunctions. The PCA Novice position practices Patient and FamilyCentered Care in concert with Houston Methodist ICAREvalues.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Followsthe patient and familycentered care standards and provides directpatient care under the direction of a registered nurse.

Responds tothe call light system contacting nursing personnel as appropriateand follows through with meeting patientneeds.

Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs on knowledge baseskill level and decisionmaking as necessary especially in areas ofquestion from preceptor and assigned licensed personnel and takesappropriate action.

Ensures own career discussions occur withappropriate management. Completes and updates the My DevelopmentPlan on an ongoing basis.

EDUCATION

HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)

WORKEXPERIENCE

Mustbe one of the following :

  • graduate of thePatient Care Tech (PCT) program
  • internalemployee participating in the Houston Methodist PCA immersionprogram / internship
  • Certified NursingAssistant (CNA)
  • Certified Medical Assistant(CMA) through an approved credentialing certificationagency

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • BLSBasic Life Support (AHA) within 1 month AND
  • CNA Certified NursingAssistant State Licensure For Skilled Nursing Facility(SNF) / Rehabdepartments only

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Performs basicpatient care activities of daily living (ADLs) within unit specificdefined limits and job scope such as assistance with patientelimination hygiene comfort safety nutrition and progressactivity
