At Houston Methodist the Patient CareAssistant (PCA) Student position is a Community In Schools (CIS)student 8week program in which incumbents should document whereapplicable care administered diagnostic measurements treatments andprocedures and demonstrate the ability to continuously progress inbasic knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriatelyand carry out delegated tasks for agespecific diverse patientpopulation.

This position receives coaching from preceptorsRegistered Nurses (RN) and management and performs delegatedpatient care tasks under the supervision of the RN.

The PatientCare Assistant Extern position responds to the call light systemand records data established by policy and procedure and reportsobservations and patient problems to the licensed nurse.

Promotes apositive work environment with the interprofessional care team.Participates in teamwork by responding positively to requests forassistance.

Works well with others to make contributions to thework effort as a whole escalating issues for problemresolution.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Followsthe patient and familycentered care standards and provides directpatient care under the direction of a registered nurse.

Responds tothe call light system contacting nursing personnel as appropriateand follows through with meeting patientneeds.

Provides care topatients assigned within unitspecific defined limits or serves as asitter after validated specific competencies.

Practices in a mannerthat is congruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.

  • Assists withmaintaining cleaning and stocking of equipment and supplies asestablished on assigned unit. May serve as an inhouse courier whichmay include retrieving blood hand delivering labs tele boxesetc.
  • Applies expectedbehaviors and actions which contributes to department score forpatientsatisfaction.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Documents whereapplicable care administered diagnostic measurements treatments andprocedures in accordance with established policies and procedureskeeping the safety of the patient in mind.

  • Reportsobservations conditions and problems of patients to the licensednurse. Provides for the privacy of patients and families keepingthe safety of the patient inmind.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs on knowledge baseskill level and decisionmaking as necessary especially in areas ofquestion from preceptor and assigned licensed personnel and takesappropriate action.

Ensures own career discussions occur withappropriate management. Completes and updates the My DevelopmentPlan on an ongoing basis.

EDUCATION

HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary education etc.

or Community In Schools (CIS) orWesley House program incumbents enrolled in a stateapprovedCertified Nursing Assistant program within one month ofhire.

LICENSESAND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • BLS Basic LifeSupport (AHA) within 1 month AND
  • CNA Certified NursingAssistant State Licensure OR
  • CMA National CertifiedMedical Assistant through an approved credentialing certificationagency upon completion of program

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
