LOCATION: 2855 Gramercy St. Houston, TX 77025

POSITION SUMMARY
Contributes to the organization by floating to multiple locations as needed, working closely with the ophthalmologist to perform basic, advance, and complex preliminary tests and measurements of the eyes. The OA floater generally meets with the patient before the Ophthalmologist to obtain medical history and prepare the patient for the examination.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for properly stocking, preparing, and maintaining the cleanliness of exam rooms during clinic.
Reviews patient chart for accuracy of information.
Prepare patients for physicians exam. Perform tests based on the specific reasons for the visit and physicians preference.
Assists with in-office procedures.
Prepare and ensure all consent forms are complete and accurate prior to in-office procedures. Prepares and cleans room after procedure.
Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
May act as scribe to assist physicians with entering exam information into electronic record. Order diagnostic tests electronically and submit prescription refills approved by physician.
Assists with preparing letters to patients and referring physicians.
Assists with diagnostic testing.
Follow-up on diagnostic tests when directed by physician.
Schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments.
Assists in training of other ophthalmic assistants.
Must meet and adhere to HEAs policies and procedures, uphold to the highest ethical principles and patient confidentiality. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
As a floater, this position is designed to travel between HEA locations to support the staffing needs of multiple locations and/or departments. Work location and/or department may be assigned at short notice.
Other duties as assigned based on business operational needs.

Pupil Assessment
Tonometry (iCare, Goldmann Applanation, and Tonopen)
Keratometry (manual and automated)
Ocular Motility Testing
Lensometry (Manual and automated)
Refraction (utilizing phoroptor, duochrome, fogging, Prince rule, trial frame)
Retinoscopy and Refinement (at the COT and COMT level)
Basic Contact Lens knowledge
Ophthalmic Coding
Scribing

Supplemental Testing may include:
BAT
Basic slit lamp examination and angle/anterior chamber evaluation (use of lighting, filters, and stains)
Pachymetry
Tear Osmolarity
Quickvue Adenovirus
InflammaDry
Color Vision
Stereo Vision
Maddox Rod

Ability to travel to different locations and departments dependent on business need.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Qualifications


COMPETENCIES
EDUCATION High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES Basic Life Support (BLS). If not BLS certified at time of employment, must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.Uncertified Ophthalmic Assistants must obtain JCAHPO (COA, COT, or COMT) certification within 1 year of employment.
EXPERIENCE Minimum 1-2 years' experience working with ophthalmologist. Bilingual Spanish Preferred.
