Hospital for Special Care is Hiring an ADMISSIONS COUNSELOR Near New Britain, CT

  • QUALIFICATIONS
    • Knowledge of third party reimbursement/collections and health insurance.
    • Minimum of two-year experience in hospital or health care facility.
    • Strong verbal, communication, organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills.
    • Experience with automated systems and Personal Computers using spreadsheet, database and word processing software are required.
    • Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting deadlines preferred
  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Admissions Counselor is responsible for verifying all insurances for every inpatient referral, pre-admission and/or admission; enhancing the financial integrity of the hospital. Responsible for obtaining all insurance information and benefits accurately prior to admission. Responsible for accurately entering this information in the system to be used by case management and patient accounting. Prepares patient files with all admission, insurance questionnaire and notes before being sent to patient accounting. Compiles all appropriate admission paperwork including consent forms and MSP questionnaires for distribution to Patient Account Representatives. Accurately documents all data in the billing software system in the appropriate fields. Acts as back-up coverage to Admission Coordinator when necessary. Acts as a liaison between Financial Services and all Service Lines.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • This position requires walking, standing, and sitting with the ability to lift/carry and push/pull up to 20 pound frequently. This position also requires frequently looking at a computer and using a telephone for extended periods of time. This position also requires the ability to bend, squat, balance, reach above shoulder height and twist frequently. The ability to touch, see, and hear are required continuously with gross grasp and fine manipulation. This position frequently changes position, moves from one area of hospital to another occasionally stands for extended period of time. 
  • COGNITIVE DEMANDS
    • This position requires high levels of independent judgment/problem solving, written expression/ communication, verbal expression / communication, reading / auditory comprehension and computation skills. Adjust schedule to adapt to changing priorities. Uses universal precautions when necessary. Initiates work independently; accesses resources and can handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • WORK DEMANDS
    • This position requires the ability to work under a variety of conditions that includes moderate noise and frequent interruptions. Uses Universal precaution as necessary. Adjust work hours and schedule to changing priorities at the hospital. Works both independently and with others. This position requires occasional overtime on an as needed basis.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of third party coverage and reimbursement issues that allow for accurate insurance verification.
    • Thoroughly verifies insurance coverage and provides legible detailed documentation in the patient file.
    • Obtains and documents accurate Medicare available days information on relevant patients on Medicare log and discusses information with Case Management/UR and fiscal as needed.
    • Establishes contact with Admitting Nurse Evaluators (ANE’s) regarding the status of the admission application with a response on the same day of receipt and maintains daily updates on changes until application is accepted or denied.
    • Keeps Admitting Manager, Admission Coordinator, PAR’s and Case Managers apprised of activity on daily basis including any problems with the admitting process.
    • Verifies all inpatient referral in Medicare or any other software verification system to confirm benefits.
    • Documentation and Communication- Ensures that all relevant admission or readmission information is obtained in a timely manner, accurately enters into the system, and communicates to appropriate parties effectively.
    • Demonstrates a strong knowledge of hospital's computer applications used in the admission process.
    • Ensure all insurance information is verified completely and accurately and entered into system. Identifying any specific reimbursement arrangements or problems.
    • Completes all benefit disclosure forms to review with patient/family.
    • Communicate with Case Managers regarding all Medicare admissions, and ensure that any Medicare denials or reinstatements received are distributed.
    • Maintain constant communication with Medicaid Financial Counselor re: status of applications, and identify any needs for assistance on problem applications.
    • Complete and submit DSS Admitting Notices
    • Administrative - Provide administrative support for Admitting Team in order to ensure the efficient flow of information. 
    • Assist and/or conduct tours as needed.
