General Job Description and Information

Horn and Associates, Inc. is a geotechnical drilling company and our business is to drill, sample and test the earth to provide data for engineers to design anything that is built on, with or through the earth. Examples are: new highways, building foundations, earth dams, coal reserve investigations and environmental projects. To do this, we operate drill rigs. These drills are operated by a driller and he is assisted by one or two driller helpers, depending on the project:

A driller helper is essentially an entry level labor position where you are helping the driller drill, handling the drill steel, helping keep the drill fluids serviced, keeping the drill supplied, etc. It is a very physically demanding job. It also is a job that is done outside in most weather conditions except a lightning storm. Our work is also executed outside of Winchester more than 95% of the time. You will typically get to our office in Winchester at 7:00 AM Monday and travel out of town in company vehicles, typically within a 2 to 4 hour radius of Winchester. While traveling, we put you up in a hotel and provide expense money. About 70% of the time you will finish your minimum 40 hr shift and be home Thursday night. About 20% of the time you will have to work on Friday and you will typically end up working 3 or 4 ten day on/4 day off shifts over the course of the year.

You must be in good physical condition and be capable of lifting a 94 lb bag of Portland cement as well as be able to tolerate the travel and outdoor work. Starting pay will typically range from $18 to $ 20 per hour, depending on relevant experience and or certifications. We also employ drillers, equipment operators, mechanics, welders and truck drivers. Thus, there is an opportunity to learn these skills. After a 90 day probation period, we provide health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance, long term disability insurance, vacation pay, uniforms and the opportunity to participate in a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan. A Class A or B CDL, surface mine card, welding or mechanic experience and some experience on or around equipment will give you an advantage over other applicants. However, the only true requirement is that you have a driver’s license and a good driving record.
