About the Role:

Network Fiber Technician I will be assigned customer facing job functions related to the installation and maintenance of the company’s broadband services primarily as it relates to the FTTP network. This includes installation of our FTTP services (Fiber broadband, IP TV, and VOIP). This will require the candidate to work in the outside plant as well as the customer premise.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Install and maintain fiber broadband services, optical cross connects, optical network units, station connections, drop, network interface device, demarcation panels, inside wiring, and customer premise equipment.
  • Perform an assortment of tasks required to make cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and testing of fiber optic cables, using power meters and light sources.
  • Ability to work safely in all weather conditions.
  • Perform record-keeping tasks associated with daily activities, including material usage forms and other plant maintenance forms.
  • Perform an assortment of tasks related to preventive maintenance of the fiber network (aerial and underground), including performing regular inspections of fiber paths, removing trees, rehanging splice closures and snowshoes, etc.
  • Maintains buildings and grounds to ensure they are safe, presentable, and in good working order.
  • Operate a bucket truck, climb ladders, and operate other equipment using safe practices.
  • Maintain required vehicle inventory levels in order to maximize route efficiency.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance on vehicles assigned to the employee. These tasks include checking and adding oil in the engine, antifreeze/coolant in the engine, water in the battery, windshield washer liquid, and air in the tires.

Qualifications:

  • GED or High School diploma required.
  • Fiber splicing overview training that includes sending light over fiber and knowledge and use of optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs), basic networking training, basic fiber training. Fusion splicing and OTDR experience preferred.
  • Skilled in fiber installation practices, fiber network troubleshooting, and reading associated meters.
  • Interpersonal skills to promote quality customer service.
  • Ability to read and understand network prints to locate facilities and fiber counts.
  • Time and resource management skills.
  • Skill in operating personal computer, MS Office products smart phone and various software packages and Web-bases products.
  • Ability to safely work aloft, and in confined spaces (attics and crawl spaces).
  • Skilled in basic electricity and electronics.
  • Skilled in basic knowledge of computer programs.
  • Skilled in basic safety principles.
  • Skilled in problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees across departments courteously and professionally.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy work: Lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. A job is in this category requires a good deal of walking, standing, and sitting with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work. This position requires the ability to effectively see and hear.
