Clinical Laboratory Scientist

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist works under the direction of the Medical Director and the Director of Laboratory Services (Technical Supervisor), and in the absence of the Medical Director and Director of Laboratory Services (Technical Supervisor) is held responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures . This position is responsible for performing and overseeing tests and procedures performed in those specialties and subspecialties in which he/she is qualified by education, training and experience. Knowledge of statistical analysis is necessary . Following CLIA mandates, responsibilities include monitoring of daily quality control and analyzer maintenance, analyzer problem solving and repair, and reagent inventory control. Independent judgement is used to assure accurate test results for quality patient test management. Open communication with the Director of Laboratory Services, physicians, nursing and other hospital personnel is essential.

l . The CLS performs analytical testing appropriately while consistently monitoring results ensuring a high degree of accuracy before reporti ng. The CLS verifies delta checks and all incompatible or highly abnormal results, documenting all verifications, and calling all panics to floor/physician.

  1. The CLS establishes, monitors and performs Quality Control and calibrations of all analyzers within area of expertise. Produces and evaluates timely monthly quality control reports for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate documentation before presenting them to the Laboratory Director and Medical Director for review. Monitors corrective actions and takes further action when necessary. Gives feedback to the laboratory staff and Laboratory Director regarding quality control and calibrations.
  1. Updates policy and procedu re manuals under the guidance of the Laboratory Director. The CLS II is responsible for keeping the procedure manuals current and up to date.
  1. The CLS has knowledge of the mechani cs of each analyzer in his/her department enabling them to do problem-solving and certain repairs necessary to maintain the analyzers at optimal efficiency. The CLS performs and oversees the daily, weekl y and monthly analyzer maintenance within their scope of responsibility, giving feed-back to staff and Laboratory Director.

5. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director the CLS understands PT (proficiency testing) requirements and oversees prompt and accurate reporting of results. The CLS Supervisor performs corrective action when results are less than 100% compliant, documenting any action taken and reporting problem and action to Director of Laboratory and Medical Director.

  1. Under the direction of the Director of the Laboratory, the CLS trains new laboratory staff into the department, providing information on all department policies and procedures, workflow of department, quality control, performance improvement , required maintenance, logs and temperature charts and other pertinent data to be maintained. The CLS trains staff to new procedures and performs staff annual competency reviews.
  1. The CLS monitors and performs statistical testing for all new procedures that the Director of the Laboratory and the Medical Director have decided will run in the department. The statistical testing will include accuracy, precision, and comparison testing. The CLS will perform testing to establish reference ranges and QC ranges for the new analytes. The CLS will ensure that proficiency testing is run and that all results are forwarded to the Medical Director and Director of Laboratory for review.
  1. The CLS maintains stock of reagents necessary for the performance of all procedures within the department. The CLS is responsible for ordering reagents on a regularly scheduled basis established by the Director of Laboratory Services. The CLS will notify the Director of Laboratory Services of any ordering probl ems or problems with the staff in the use/misuse of the reagents.
  1. The CLS understands the function and proper use of the Laboratory Information System, shares in file maintenance, and has knowledge of the system to be able to problem-solve interface and other computer related situations. The CLS strives to use the LIS to best advantage, actively seeking to extend knowledge of LIS, and computers in general.
