Highline College (WA) is Hiring an ACHIEVE Advisor Near Des Moines, WA

The ACHIEVE Advisor is responsible for providing a broad range of services in support of students enrolled in the ACHIEVE Program at Highline College. The ACHIEVE Advisor engages in recruitment and outreach efforts with community-based partners, such as local school districts, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR), county and state Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), and other community based organizations. This position is a member of the intake team to assist in the selection of students. This position provides individualized educational planning to assist students to create an educational pathway related to current or future educational and employment goals. This position identifies and connects students to existing campus resources for disability-related accommodations, tutoring support, mentoring, and advising, and designs and implements other individualized retention strategies. This position is responsible to assist in the design of new courses as needed and teaches one college success seminar each quarter. Incumbent in this classification also works collaboratively with other faculty and staff in the ACHIEVE Program.
This position is an exempt, salaried overtime-eligible, at-will, full-time position. Hours of work include evening, weekend and travel.Reporting directly to the Associate Director of ACHIEVE, this position will:
  • Advises students on program requirements;
  • Develop academic goals with students;
  • Evaluate student's academic history and education, including transcript evaluation;
  • Introduce students to resources available throughout the college and within the ACHIEVE Program;
  • Maintain an active case file on each enrolled student;
  • Maintain statistical information and summary information in reports as needed. Submit required paperwork according to specified timelines;
  • Consult with a variety of educational and social service agencies in the community to explain program requirements or address individual student progress or needs;
  • Develop, facilitate, and deliver classroom instruction;
  • Work collaboratively with program faculty, staff, and program director to research and develop best practice strategies to assist students with intellectual disabilities in being successful in their programs;
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address student and program needs;
  • Work with team to develop, implement, and maintain marketing, recruitment and retention strategies for assigned program;
  • Work collaboratively to create brochures, orientation materials, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation;
  • Facilitate orientation meetings;
  • Make presentations to schools, state and county organizations, community-based organizations, and other groups to market program and for recruitment.
Ability to:
  • Coordinate activities to introduce students to available community services and campus resources;
  • Work in a multicultural environment;
  • Explain policies and procedures, rules, and regulations;
  • Prioritize multiple projects and work in an environment with regular interruptions;
  • Meet deadlines/timelines;
  • Effectively coordinate and collaborate with multiple groups;
  • Manage and organize detailed information about the program and student progress;
  • Develop classes and curriculum for workshops and/or classes;
  • Communicate clearly (written and verbal);
  • Proficiently use Microsoft Office Suite. 
Knowledge of:
  • Local social service agencies and other resources;
  • FERPA requirements;
  • Assessments/Testing;
  • College and community resources and/or programs;
  • Local, state, and federal rules and regulations;
  • Local college academic requirements;
  • High school completion requirements;
  • Advising and coaching (such as motivational interviewing and strategies to help students set and meet goals) techniques. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, or related field; AND
  • Two years teaching experience with young adults with disabilities (preferably in high school or community college setting).
Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or Social Science;
  • Two years experience working transition-age youth with disabilities;
  • Two years experience working in an academic environment, preferably alternative education.
