Highline College (WA) is Hiring a Navigator, Cultural Learning Communities Near Des Moines, WA

The person in this position will play an important role in supporting Highline’s Promise Partnership and Cultural Learning Communities (CLC). The Navigator will provide case management support to students and their families, provide support and resources to post-secondary education pathways and career workshops, engage with King County Promise partnership events and programs.
 
This is an exempt, grant-funded, full time position. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2024. The expected funding grant will be until June 30, 2027.Reporting to the Director of Cultural Learning Communities (CLC), this position will:
  • Guide students in choosing the right academic and career paths, helping them explore degrees, select courses, and navigate college procedures for a successful transition to transfer, applied bachelor programs, or entering the workforce;
  • Collaborate with high school staff, parents, and students to support the transition to post-secondary education. In addition to attending meetings and planning sessions, a key role involves establishing a visible presence at local high schools. Building rapport with high school seniors through attendance at events like career fairs and parent-teacher conferences is crucial. This direct engagement ensures personalized guidance, shares insights into post-secondary options, and addresses concerns, enhancing the effectiveness of support initiatives for a successful transition;
  • Promote the CLC Highline College by improving communication among faculty, students, and staff. Increase internal referrals to the various CLC programs and services;
  • Manage student applications and screening processes;
  • Advocate for and assist in integrating and incorporating learning community practices, norms and organizational values into campus wide professional development opportunities;
  • Provide culturally appropriate academic and college-success advising for high school students and first-year students in the CLC programs, particularly “Highline Promise Partnership” Students;
  • Track student attendance and academic progress towards goals, and key measures of success;
  • Co-develop seamless transition plan and culturally relevant events for the target group students: Native American/Alaskan Native, Black/African, Hispanic/Latino/Latinx/Latine, and Pasifika/NHPI males and non-binary students within Highline College King County Promise;
  • Establish strong connections between CLC students and faculty advisors for degree exploration and planning. Provide comprehensive support to CLC students, guiding them through financial aid deadlines and assisting with scholarship applications. Collaborate closely with faculty to identify and address both academic and personal challenges that students may encounter;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Student Services offices, including Center for Leadership and Service, Center for Cultural Inclusiveness and Excellence, MESA, and TRiO);
  • Facilitate culturally relevant workshops. Including but not limited to college readiness and success; financial wellness; and transfer;
  • Assist students with transfer applications and admissions processes;
  • Foster and support a culture of collaboration and sharing of resources across the CLC programs;
  • Maintain communications with learning community students, faculty, student services, office of instruction, and other administrators.
Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Adept to using various software applications including Excel, Word and other relevant software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Bachelor’s Degree, AND
  • Experience working with students from historically underserved populations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree; 
  • Experience in programing for College Preparation, Leadership, and Advising;
  • Experience working in Higher Education.
