Job Summary:
The International Students Advisor reviews international students' admission documents, assists in complex interpretation and explanation of college policies and procedures, as well as those of the Department of Homeland Security with regards to immigration status. The position provides support and guidance to international students by facilitating their enrollment, ensuring admission and immigration requirements are met and providing these students with the best opportunity to achieve their educational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assists new and continuing students by helping them define and clarify their educational and career goals
  • Evaluates admission applications and supporting documents to ensure compliance with federal regulations and college standards
  • Provides advisement for international student related issues with regards to Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations pursuant to F1/M1/J1 immigration status
  • Recommends courses and programs of study for new, continuing and transferring students
  • Maintains proof of international student health insurance
  • Supports and monitors international student employment
  • Implements strategies for international student recruitment and retention
  • Maintains accurate information through the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and Immigration (USCIS)
  • Assists students with creating, following and adjusting their individualized educational plan (IEP)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in higher education or related field and one (1) year of related experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, policies and procedures and programs
  • Knowledge of academic advising and career development principles and practices, residency and financial aid regulations
  • Experience advising students in higher education setting
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently while taking initiative to create opportunities for recruitment and advising
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to work effectively with a wide range of constituents and to provide high quality support and customer service constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to apply ethics, logic and critical thinking to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to make evidence based recommendations using relevant data
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office software and specific computer programs related to area of responsibility
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evening and weekend assignments
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staffAdditional Requirements:
