Hickory Veterinary Hospital is Hiring a Veterinary Assistant Near Chesapeake, VA

About This Location:
Would you like to live and work close to Virginia Beach and the beautiful Outer Banks of North Carolina? Hickory Veterinary Hospital is located midway between them in Chesapeake, Virginia. We are a full-service hospital, providing exceptional veterinary care to dogs, cats, exotics, and pocket pets. Our hospital has a ratio of 1.5 Licensed Veterinary Technicians per DVM. We welcome pet patients needing regular medical, surgical, and dental care. We also offer reproductive services, Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Food Therapy. Our outstanding team of Licensed Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Client Service Representatives, and Kennel Attendants all provide attentive and accomplished support to our doctors as well as our clients. In addition to physical examinations, surgeries, and dentistry, client communication and client education are of upmost importance. It is important that SVP Veterinarians treat each pet and client like part of their own family.
Overview:
We are seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our growing hospital to provide exceptional care to our patients! You will work alongside other skilled Vet Assistants, support our Credentialed Veterinary Technicians and DVMs in the daily flow of the hospital. Responsibilities / Qualifications:

Position Skills:

  • Assist DVMs and credentialed veterinary technicians with appointments, prepping patients for surgery and minor procedures, surgical assisting, and pro-actively set up for any procedures or diagnostic tests
  • Restrain animals in a safe, efficient, and caring manner
  • Obtain accurate vitals, obtain medical histories, and/or note any changes of patient’s condition to DVM
  • Collect and prepare laboratory samples such as fecal, urine, and ear cytologies
  • Care and maintenance of all medical equipment including laboratory machines, surgical packs, anesthesia machines, and any other tools that are essential to daily operations
  • High quality client communication on patient updates and questions
Position Requirements:
  • High School diploma or GED certificate
  • Flexible schedule including some weekend and holiday shifts
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and animal handling
  • Must possess strong communication skills, good judgment and be able to manage stressful situations, and work with others on a team respectfully
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
