Job Role Summary

The EMS educator understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the EMS discipline(s) they teach. They can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for all learners. The EMS Educator has a working knowledge of the educational process to develop and graduate paramedic students.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Provides instruction to various age-related groups of learners within Indianapolis EMS, associated public safety providers, community and university students
• Writes evaluation instruments and administers tests for outcomes, competency, and mastery of content
• Works and interacts with a team of other EMS Educators to provide quality of pre-service and in-service programs
• Provides information and guidance to participating students
• Organizes, schedule, and conduct educational experiences in the classroom, clinical and field setting
• Monitors educational activities, maintains accurate records and submits required reports on time
• Communicates with students, staff members, providers and the public in a professional, positive fashion
• Participates in audit, evaluation, and research programs in emergency care
• Participates in activites that will improve individual performance, such as a self-assessment, peermentoring, peer-review programs and continuing education activities

Job Requirements

• Must hold a current Paramedic Certification from the State of Indiana or hold a current NREMT Paramedic Certification and complete the Paramedic Certification reciprocity process for the State of Indiana
• A minimum of five years clinical experience as a pre-hospital provider required; at least two years of this must be as a Paramedic in a clinical environment
• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred
• Valid Driver's License required; must meet and remain in compliance with IEMS driver eligibility policy
• Must be provider-certified in the following: ACLS, AHA CPR, PEPP, EVOC, and two NAEMT disciplines
• Instructor level certification in all of the following: ACLS, AHA, CPR, EVOC, PEPP, and two NAEMT disciplines; candidates who do not hold all of the required instructor certifications must successful complete the next available appropriate instructor course(s) and attain certification within one year of hire
• Indiana Primary Instructor certification preferred; candidates who do not hold an Indiana Primary Instructor certification must successfully complete the next available appropriate national or state authorized instructor course(s) and attain certification within one year of hire
• NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 required
• AWR 111 and 160 required
• Two years prior teaching experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of basic and advanced life support equipment in used in pre-hospital emergency medical care
• Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations governing the provision/operation and educational requirements of basic and advanced life support services and personnel
• Knowledge of state and federal curricula related to all levels of pre-hospital emergency care providers
• Demonstrates the ability to adjust teaching techniques and present materials for all age groups with different learning styles (i.e. adolescent, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, and adult)
• Ability to execute responsibilities as they relate to course planning, instruction, evaluation, and coordination of EMS programs
• Ability to use and/or develop various instructional aids including audio-visual equipment, training mannequins, curriculum materials, and student handout materials
• Excellent verbal and nonverbal communication skills
• Self-motivated and dependable
• Ability to manage daily class activities, learning environment, course paperwork and student records
• conduct educational opportunities in an appropriate and timely basis
• Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data and interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs.
• Use various computer software applications including, but not limited to, word processing, PowerPoint and other appropriate presentation software, database, spreadsheet and test generator, and programs to create content for in-class and virtual learning modules
• Ability to understands and utilize formative and summative strategies with both formal and informal techniques to evaluate and ensure the cognitive, affective and psychomotor development of the learner
  Knowledge of CAAHEP-CoAEMSP accreditation
  Teach provider classes with pre-service or continuing education

• Maintains protected health information in accordance with HIPAA privacy guidelines and regulations

Judgment

• Employee may work independently under the general direction of their leader

Contacts - Internal/External

• Frequently meets with students and the public. Such contacts are initiated for the exchange information, explanation of programs, to provide instruction, and coordination of training activities.
• Primary locations: office/classroom setting, laboratory, clinical sites, and field sites
  • Instructional facilities may include patient care areas, clinics, nursing offices, classroom and field setting.
  • EMS Educators may be required to attend meetings or perform work from remote offices.
  • Vocational hazards of field activities for the EMS Educator, may consist of traffic and inclement weather, violent and unsafe emergency scenes, and hazardous material or Weapons of Mass Destruction environments while participating in experiential educational activities

Special Effort Required

• Use of basic and advanced life support equipment in used in pre-hospital emergency medical care.
