Heritage Manor Senior Living is Hiring a Cook Near Pittsburgh, PA

Do you love to cook and bake interesting meals?

Heritage Manor is looking for a dynamic from scratch cook who feels comfortable cooking and baking for 50 plus people.

The hours are:

  • First shift 6:00 am - 2:30 pm
  • Second shift 10:00 am - 6:30 pm
  • Must be able to work weekends and most holidays

This position is primarily responsible for the entire food preparation process, including, but not limited to preparation and cooking of meals and cleaning kitchen and dining room areas.

Must be able to pass both a drug and background screening test. 

Duties and Responsibilities include:

1. Follow proper handling, cooking, storage and disposal of food according to federal, state and local laws and facility policies and procedures

2.Prepare meals according to set weekly menu.

3.Alert Residents to any changes in the menu in advance.

4.Ensure that meals are served timely and according to state regulations.

5.Proper labeling of all food items and left overs in refrigerators and freezers indicating food item and date.

6.Prepare alternate meals as requested.

7.Prepare evening snacks. Organize and stock snack cart.

8.Prepare special diet requirements as prescribed by the residents’ physician.

9.Communicate with Kitchen Manager regarding inventory items and supplies and keep accurate records of items that need to be ordered.

10.Fill and serve beverage cups for morning, afternoon and evening meals.

11.Serving meals, clearing and cleaning tables and mopping the floor in the dining room after each meal in a timely manner.

12.Prepare trays for delivery to residents with an illness.

13.Properly clean kitchen and prep areas, storage areas, equipment and kitchen floor according to daily/weekly/monthly schedule and assignments.

14.Clean dishes, silverware, glassware and cooking utensils using the commercial dishwasher, and when out of order, the two bowl sink according to sanitation standards and guidelines.

15.Ensure residents’ privacy is protected at all times.

16.Rotate cloth table cloths as needed.

17.Demonstrate courtesy in all interactions with residents, visitors, colleagues and supervisors.

18.Performs all other duties as assigned.

Skills required: Must have at least one year experience cooking in a restaurant, food service establishment or long term care facility. Must be able to follow recipes and prepare quality, from scratch meals. Ability to operate all kitchen equipment safely and appropriately is required. Ability to effectively communicate and prioritize tasks, make sound decisions and show good judgment is a must. Employee must possess excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and residents. Close attention to detail is a must with the capability to organize tasks. The ability to accept and benefit from critical review is necessary. Ability to deal with emergencies and to work in a crisis environment is requisite. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid training is required. Attendance at all facility required trainings is mandatory.

Educational Experience: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma is required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to read, write and speak English in order to understand and carry out instructions and effectively work with staff and residents. Knowledge of arithmetic and units of measurements used in food preparation is required.

Essential Functions: In order to meet residents’ needs the position requires the ability to physically perform job duties and to work in the environmental conditions that require movement throughout the building. Standing for long periods of time, stooping, sitting, bending, lifting, carrying, steps, as well as other physical demands may be required.

Environment: May be exposed to extreme heat, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.
