HJF is seeking a Research Assistant III/Team lead to perform research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects.
Position Overview:
  • Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Solves problems of moderate complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.
  • This position will be in support of Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB)/Research, Assessment and Development laboratory (RAD).
  • The incumbent will work in the Research, Assessment and Development laboratroy (RAD) in the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), within the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).
  • The RAD laboratory evaluates, develops, validates and executes nucleic acid and serological based testing in support of clinical and research testing focused on the detection, quantification and/or speciation of, HIV, SARS C0V-2, blood borne infections, parasites, and other pathogens of US Military interest.
  • The incumbent will perform and oversee all laboratory functions following DCB’s policies, procedures and quality management plan.
  • He/She will perform and oversee the performance of Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT) and routine/specialized molecular tests in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs),
  • Good Laboratory Practices and CAP/CLIA/FDA regulatory agency requirements, as assays developed may be transferred to DCB’s CAP accredited HIV Diagnostics and Reference Laboratory (HDRL).
  • The incumbent will manage day-to-day laboratory operations including direct staff oversite and will represent RAD in inter-department meetings.
Responsibilities:
  • Works closely with staff scientist to design novel molecular/serological assays, summarize findings and generate reports.
  • Performs molecular and serological assays in support of clinical and research protocols in a regulated environment.
  • Utilizes state-of-art instrumentation in performing serological and molecular testing in manual and automated formats including ELISA, PCR, qPCR and ddPCR assays.
  • Prepares quality control solutions, reagents, kits and specimens for analysis in clinical diagnostic assays.
  • Provides direct oversite to technical staff.
  • Works with the Research Coordinator to support ordering and spending tracking as well as maintaining inventories (e.g. equipment, reagents/consumables and chemical), maintenance schedules, and waste records.
  • Maintains reagent and consumable inventory at acceptable levels including tracking of expiration dates to ensure uninterrupted laboratory functions.
  • Trains new technicians and research assistants in theories and techniques in molecular biology to ensure adequate training for assigned tasks and duties.
  • Writes, reviews and revises SOPs for developed assays and equipment use and maintenance.
  • Maintains accurate and complete documentation for all testing, maintenance, and any other assigned activities as required by DCB’s Quality Management Plan.
  • Maintains testing metrics and quality documentation and provides them monthly to the Quality Assurance Group.
  • Performs weekly laboratory safety walkthroughs.
  • Assists in cost breakdowns, budgets, and project summaries.
  • Completes all required safety, HIPAA, IA, CITI, IT and other required training within specified time frames.
  • Represents the RAD in inter-department meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must be capable of learning procedures with minimal interaction with PI or Technical Supervisor. This requires an individual with sufficient understanding of molecular and serology laboratory procedures who is capable of trouble shooting and developing action plans to resolve issues and move research forward.
  • Excellent general molecular and serological laboratory technical skills.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory handling SARS-CoV-2, HIV, or other BSL-2 level infected specimens.
  • High attention to detail in both task performance and documentation.
  • Ability to write detailed Standard Operation Procedures, utilize statistical software to analyze data, and communicate data results orally and in writing.
  • Experience in providing technical supervision to staff.
  • Highly flexible, able to address rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to perform sequence analysis and primer/probe design.
  • Experience working on assay development and validation and meet deliverable timelines.
  • Familiar with statistics and statistical software.
  • Good communication and analytical skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assigned Lead: The incumbent will supervise technical staff within the RAD laboratory. 
Physical Capabilities:
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
Qualifications:

  • This position will take place primarily in a clinical or laboratory setting. 
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience required.
Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
