Superintendent Job Description
Superintendents will coordinate and manage all on-site activities, as well work with project teams including Project Managers, Project Engineers, Assistant Superintendent, Foreman, and Field Personnel and other office departments. Superintendent’s primary goal is to ensure work conforms to specifications, adheres to schedules, and coordinates a site safety program following the company’s safety manual, to deliver successful projects to owners, on time and on budget.

Superintendents complete organizational and project management responsibilities to effectively lead the construction team and ensure they have all the resources they need. They often have the following duties:
Essential Characteristics
Superintendents are responsible for keeping track of just about every aspect of a construction project. This requires strong verbal and written communication skills. While not explicitly required, multilingualism can be a tremendous asset.
Change is inevitable on construction projects; Superintendents need to be able to adapt to resolve these issues in a timely manner to avoid extensive cost overruns.
The professionals a Superintendent oversees or works with, will heed the demands of a Superintendent with extensive experience as they will be fully confident in their abilities.
Construction Superintendents work with many people daily. To keep these professional relationships running smoothly, Superintendents need skills such as: awareness, diplomacy, listening, networking, team building, respect, and tolerance. These skills provide benefits beyond the project’s labor productivity, to reaching key future clients and contract decision-makers.
As part of setting the tone of a project, Superintendents must display exemplary professionalism in how they treat, interact, and correspond with others.
Do to all the moving parts within a construction project, Superintendents need to take initiative and plan, creating contingency plans to maintain operational efficiency in the face of unexpected challenges.
Utilize any/all tools available to help manage personnel, materials, and equipment.
Able to manage the pressures created between clients’ needs and subcontractors interests and call on this skill set when tensions arise, all while holding their own, respectfully disagreeing with others if it means achieving key project goals.
Good Superintendents don’t settle for subpar quality. They’re always looking for ways to go above and beyond, focused on the details. This commitment to quality helps maintain trust among project stakeholders and reduces errors in work.
Technology plays an increasingly important role in the construction industry; therefore, Superintendents need to be capable of learning new software and integrating it into their workflow.
Due to the far-reaching nature of the job of Superintendent, you need to be able to strategically delegate tasks, assess subordinates, and determine which team members are best suited to handle specific duties.
