The Opportunity
The Vice President, School-Based Programming (VP of Schools) ensures ongoing programmatic excellence and the most optimal outcomes for students and partners. With strategic and operational responsibility for school-based programming across a range of public schools in the School District of Philadelphia, the VP will create the strategy, steward relationships with partner schools, and develop the innovations necessary for comprehensively supporting our students
The VP of Schools will lead a layered and distributed team of program staff, building their capacity to effectively implement programmatic initiatives, assess and address implementation challenges, and define strategies that increase student engagement, educational attainment, career exposure and readiness. They will do this through oversight of system design, training and professional development, and data-driven program management, cultivating a supportive, yet effective management culture.
Reporting to the Co-President & CEO and collaborating closely with the VP of College and Career Pathways and VP of Program Strategy and Partnerships, the School Programming Leader will play a critical role in driving action toward a student-centered, inclusive and realizable System Change agenda that advances education and career outcomes for young people in Philadelphia.
What You’ll Do
School-Based Program Leadership & Implementation
  • Direct all aspects of Heights' school-based programming to ensure high quality and effective support to 3,000 students across an array of 23 middle and high school partners
  • Operationalize Heights’ programmatic vision for growth and impact into actionable long-term objectives, budgets, and success metrics for increasing middle and high school graduation, career exposure and readiness, and cohort engagement in key anchor experiences
  • Manage strategic relationships with partner schools; engage school-based stakeholders to align on program expectations, both in the initiation stage and in monitoring progress toward agreed upon terms
  • Refine and evolve scope and sequence of postsecondary advising for school-based staff, inclusive of program activities, curriculum and events
  • Enable staff with the structures, trainings and tools that drive action and accountability to deliver student-centered services rooted in best practices related to school selection, college readiness and career-connected learning
  • Design and provide oversight of a system to successfully transition K-12 students to Heights College Success and Career Pathways programming
Program Monitoring & Evaluation
  • Collaborate with the VP of Data & Innovation to support the development of data systems (Salesforce), tools and reports to provide reliable data to assess and improve school-based programming
  • Refine key programmatic metrics and goals, and conduct site-based planning to align school-specific impact goals to larger organizational priorities
  • Develop strategy to monitor the quality of site-based operations, including visits, observations of staff, surveying of participants, progress updates and meeting with school stakeholders
  • Ritualize data analysis and storytelling as a critical lever of program and performance management, building the capacity of the team to utilize data to develop targeted strategies
Team Development
  • Build, manage, and retain a high-performing team of nearly 30 Program staff, creating an environment where they are equipped with the information, resources, and support needed to thrive and achieve results
  • Directly supervise four (4) team members for performance and engagement, leveraging their unique perspectives and expertise, and “coaching the coaches” to ensure effective management, delegation, mentorship and differentiated development across multiple levels of staff
  • Oversee the onboarding and professional development of school-based staff, identifying role-specific activities for their first 90 days and ensuring ongoing training opportunities to deepen their content knowledge
Organizational Leadership
  • Serve as strategic partner to the Co-Presidents, Senior Management Team, and staff, stewarding the organization’s strategic plan objective to align programs to impact and contributing to the overall management of the organization
  • Act as staff liaison to the Program Committee, coordinating and attending meetings, drafting agendas and minutes. Attend Program Committee meetings as appropriate.
  • Partner with the VP of Advancement and VP of Program Strategy & Partnerships to build relationships and engage a wide range of stakeholders (e.g., coalitions, college partners, foundations and corporate partners, practitioner groups) in Heights mission to transform pathways for young people across the city
  • Take an active role in building community at work and among site-based staff, ensuring Heights continues to be a a student-centered, equity-focused, collaborative and innovative great place to work
What You’ll Bring
  • At least 10 years of related professional experience working in schools, college access, youth development and/or workforce development, with at least 3 years of leadership responsibility for program design, implementation & evaluation
  • At least 5 years of experience managing and coaching a layered team, preferably across sites
  • Deep expertise in college and career programming with an understanding of success factors for students from low-income and first-generation college going communities
  • Experience implementing systems and/or national program models with perspective on how to flex for nuances at the site level
  • Evidence of building structure, iterating and making lasting change to improve processes or programs; you have experience driving innovation while navigating existing practices, policies and interdependencies
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred

  • A capacity builder. You look for ways to help the team build internal strength. Sometimes this means coaching, sometimes this means building infrastructure. You thoughtfully consider strategies to support the adoption and implementation of new mindsets, knowledge, skills and behaviors.
In addition to your experience, expertise and strengths, you must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter. You’ll also need to adhere to COVID safety guidelines as required by the Department of Human Services and/or the School District of Philadelphia.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary for this position, which depends on prior work experience and our assessment of your demonstrated fit for the role, will likely be between $130,000-$160,000. Heights offers competitive base salaries based on the Philadelphia market among not-for-profit organizations of similar size, with opportunities for salary growth over time. We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact on behalf of the organization, and take internal and external equity seriously. Work Arrangements
Heights Philadelphia currently maintains a hybrid work environment where staff work from home, in our Center City office, and on-site with school partners, as determined by the staff member's or team’s responsibilities, the needs of the organization as well as the preferences of the individual staff member, where possible. We also prioritize time together as an organization - living in our value of succeeding together. All office-based Heights employees spend Wednesdays in-office in Center City, building community at our monthly staff professional development days and via our virtual staff meetings.
Over the course of a typical week, the Vice President can expect to spend 3-4 days in-person, including spending time at schools. As their schedule permits, the VP will be able to work remotely for 2 days per week. The VP will attend occasional evening or weekend programming (3-4 times quarterly), including programming at schools or in the community, board meetings, org-wide events, etc.
