JOB OVERVIEW:

• The Naval Architect is responsible for leading the technical design and drawing development for contracts and product developments. The architect will evaluate project RFQ’s and work with marine customers to develop specifications, general arrangements, calculations, and cost estimates. Support onsite production and shipbuilding with leadership and decision-making relating to manufacturability, regulatory rules and continuous process improvement while adhering to the company’s quality standards. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / SKILLS / RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for preparing general arrangements, design calculations and production drawing development for the construction of inland river hopper barges, deck barges and docks in accordance ABS rules. 
• Leads design efforts in the development of new designs and the optimization of existing designs, from calculations and drawing production through production. 
• Assist in preparation of cost estimates and construction specifications for new contract opportunities.
• Checks drawings prior to shop release for accuracy, conformance to design intent and ease of production. 
• Prepares calculations and reports as required for specific marine project applications.
• Prepares loading charts for constructed inland river barges. 
• Leads design review meetings with customers, discussing the aspects of the design, customer change considerations, manufacturing processes, and contractual review.
• Works with designers and drafters in the development of vessel design information.
• Provides leadership and direction to others, facilitating mentoring and development of teammates.
• Shows a regular presence on the shop floor building relationships with operations personnel to gather input and insight on challenges they face in building the product more safely, efficiently and ensure fabrication meets the design intent.
• Bring ideas for design improvement into new and existing product designs.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture or related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program.
• 5 to 10 years experience in marine design with ABS Rules relating to inland river barges.
• Fluent in writing and speaking English language.
• Strong communication skills, written and oral. Able to communicate effectively with non-technical personnel.
• Positive Attitude and Strong Work Ethic
• Strong Computer Skills, MS Windows; Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Strong Planning and Organizing skills, with ability to prioritize based on project completion schedules.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PE license in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering preferred.
• Proficient and experienced with Autodesk Inventor CAD systems.
• Experience in creating complete drawing packages including assemblies and component parts, parts lists, BOM’s.
• Experience in Metal Fabrication tools and techniques
• Weld specification and weld symbol literacy
• AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code exposure and knowledge
