Job Overview
Founded in 1967, Haight Ashbury Free Clinic was the first nonsectarian free medical clinic in the United States. Using a volunteer staff, the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic saw hundreds of people within the first days of opening. The mission of this new model of healthcare was to provide compassionate care regardless of anyone’s ability to pay. It was during this time that The Haight Ashbury Free Clinic coined the phrase, “Health care is a right, not a privilege”.
Volunteer staff will work collaboratively at the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic in providing quality healthcare services to the uninsured and marginalized populations.
The Medical Assistant Volunteer is a key member of the Clinic Care Team and as such, performs clinical and administrative tasks, under the supervision of the Clinic Operations Manager, consistent with HealthRIGHT 360 policies and protocols.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist clinicians in the examination process.
• Perform office tests including vision screening, spirometry, EKG, rapid strep, UA and urine pregnancy tests.
• Perform phlebotomy, injections, TB tests, breathing treatments, preparation responsibilities.
• Perform intake, including vital signs, list chief complaints, allergies, immunization histories and complete chart forms, as appropriate to patient type.
• Place patients in rooms and prepare them for examination.
• Clean, prepare and stock examination rooms, coordination responsibilities.
• Receive and return telephone calls from patients and pharmacies.
Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• High School Graduate or Equivalent.
• Culturally competent and able to work with a diverse population; genuine and friendly; practices attentive and active listening; has the patience to hear people out and integrity to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
• Ability to enter data into various electronic systems while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the data; Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word Outlook and Internet applications.
• Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and reliability are imperative.
• Action-oriented; ability to multi-task and work cooperatively and effectively as a team member.
• Commitment to working with the uninsured and marginalized populations; strong initiative and enthusiasm; interested in community-based healthcare and willingness to pitch in whenever needed.

Today, Walden House treats people with mental health and substance use disorder problems at various residential and outpatient centers throughout California, including in-prison treatment programs, and facilities in San Francisco and Los Angeles, providing drug and alcohol treatment and mental health, vocational and housing services for people transitioning back into their communities. Like HAFC, Walden House has always served people who are uninsured, homeless and socio-economically disenfranchised, including those with HIV/AIDS. Haight Ashbury Free Clinics and Walden House have both grown over the years, becoming national models for community healthcare, substance use disorder treatment and mental health services. The organizations merged on July 1, 2011 to best serve the most vulnerable members of our community. On July 1, 2012, Haight Ashbury Free Clinics Walden House adopted a new name: HealthRIGHT 360. A Growing Family of Programs Asian American Recovery Services (AARS) joined the family of HealthRIGHT 360 programs in 2013. Founded in 1985, AARS has grown to serve thousands of people throughout San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. In 2014, North County Serenity House of San Diego county and Womens Recovery Association (WRA) of San Mateo joined HealthRIGHT 360, continuing its leadership as a provider of gender responsive services for women and women with children. In 2015 Lyon-Martin Health Services became the third primary care clinic operated by HealthRIGHT 360, continuing its specialized care for women and transgender individuals. Tenderloin Health Services (formerly Glide Health Services clinic) became the fourth primary care clinic in 2015, providing care in San Franciscos Tenderloin neighborhood. Prototypes joined in 2016 expanding behavioral health care for women and children and services to survivors of domestic violence in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties. Strengthening services for women and girls in San Francisco, Womens Community Clinic joined our family of programs in 2017. Womens Community Clinic traces its roots to the Womens Need Center, a program of Haight Ashbury Free Clinics that closed in 1999 and reopened four months later with its new name.
