HEAL Utah is Hiring a Development Manager/ Director Near Salt Lake, UT

Areas of Responsibility:

The Development Manager or Director collaborates with the Executive Director, other HEAL Utah staff, board, and supporters to continue building one of Utah’s most successful statewide grassroots environmental advocacy organizations. This role is critical to the sustainability and effectiveness of a small, collaborative organization like HEAL, and to our relevance within our larger community. We’re looking for someone who is passionate, professional, organized, enthusiastic, and deeply skilled in building relationships. This opportunity provides a strong candidate with the opportunity to help set strategy, implement and see the outcomes of their success, and grow with the organization. The Development Manager or Director’s fundraising work will support HEAL’s general operations as well as campaigns related to energy and climate, clean air, and radioactive and toxic waste–HEAL Utah’s three main issue areas.

About HEAL Utah

  • HEAL is a grassroots organization focused on safeguarding the health of the people of Utah by advocating for 1) clean air policies and practices, 2) minimizing and mitigating the impacts of climate change through an accelerated transition to clean energy and carbon drawdown strategies, 3) limiting exposure to radioactive waste and other industrial toxins, and 4) preventing and reversing the impacts of these environmental health risks that are borne disproportionately by racially and ethnically marginalized, rural, and low-income communities.
  • HEAL’s primary tools are grassroots education/activation, evidence-based policy development/advocacy, and assuring the integrity of democratic processes and institutions to facilitate policymaking that is in the best interests of the general public.
  • HEAL educates the residents of Utah about environmental problems, solutions, and policies. We also work to build civic participation skills to foster a more engaged and effective environmental constituency base. We believe that we must not just clean up our physical environment, but empower community members to influence the decisions that impact their health and environment, and advocate for democratic processes that assure their voices will be heard and valued.

The HEAL Utah Development Manager or Director will be responsible for top to bottom planning and execution of the development strategy, including the following:

Strategic Development and Fundraising Management

  • Create a strategic fundraising plan that integrates grants, donors, the annual campaign drive, foundations, business and individual partnerships, fundraising events, and other fundraising activities.
  • Work with the Executive Director to prepare annual fundraising budget targets and calendar and independently manage activities to meet those objectives.
  • Organize and support the work of the HEAL Board Financial Sustainability Committee to review, augment, and help execute fundraising plans.
  • Support HEAL staff through the pursuit of fundraising activities to support specific campaigns and new opportunities.
  • Keep engaged and up to speed on HEAL campaigns and activities to message publicly and draft relevant fundraising materials.
  • Coordinate administrative duties with Executive Director and Office Manager.

Grant Management

  • Adopt and maintain the annual grant milestones calendar that includes application and reporting preparation periods and deadlines.
  • Oversee the preparation of priorities, grant proposals, and reports (narrative and financial) working with the Executive Director, other staff, and contracted grant writer.
  • Research and pursue new funding sources for general support or specific issue campaigns or projects.
  • Maintain relationships with contacts from granting organizations.
  • Track the status of all grant proposals, maintain foundation files, and maintain evaluation metrics.

Membership and Donors

  • Manage all aspects of donor relationships, working with the Office Manager to properly categorize, record, and acknowledge donations.
  • Create and execute strategy for donor recruitment, engagement, and retention.
  • Work with the Executive Director to maintain a regular meeting schedule with major donors.
  • Work closely with the board to recruit and develop new donors at all levels.
  • Work with the Communications Director to oversee the development, promotion, and execution of annual fundraising messaging.
  • Conduct analysis to understand current and lapsed donor needs and interests.
  • Expand HEAL Utah’s donations from major donors, regular members, foundations, business partnerships, and online and social media giving programs.
  • Oversee the overall planning and execution of HEAL Utah’s major annual fundraising events, including a spring event and a fall party.
  • Plan and coordinate smaller gatherings and strategic meetings for major donors, business allies, and monthly donors.

Database and documentation management

  • Manage the membership/donor database (currently Salsa CRM and Engage).
  • Generate monthly thank you calls and cards and annual tax summaries for donors.
  • Oversee the apportionment of expenses to campaigns and funding sources.

This position is a good fit for individuals who are self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, comfortable working independently, able to multitask, and willing to take initiative.
