Job Title: Director of Emergency Shelter Services
Reports To: Senior Director of Shelter
Location: Boston
Salary Range:$80,000 - $90,000
Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt


Overview
:

The Director of Shelter leads the team that develops and delivers Heading Home’s services to Families experiencing homelessness overseeing emergency shelters. Reporting to the Senior Director of Shelter, the Director of Shelter will ensure that the team meets ambitious program delivery goals, while making necessary modifications to program design and organizational structure in order to effect meaningful change in the lives of Heading Home’s clients. Heading Home programs operate using a trauma informed lens, and using evidence-based models like Motivational Interviewing and Mobility Mentoring. Directors are expected to utilize these modalities and ensure that staff are trained in and provide services using those models. Moreover, the Director of Shelter is responsible for overseeing all elements of the program- and funding- related compliance and reporting, and acts as the main point of contact for Heading Home’s contract with the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC) to provide emergency shelter to homeless families.

As a member of the senior leadership team, this individual has a significant stake in the direction of Heading Home’s programming.

Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions:

  • Build, lead, and inspire a diverse team of professionals towards A broad range of client-driven goals while maintaining positive team culture, particularly during times of organizational growth and change
  • Provide regular supervision, support, and personalized professional development for the Shelter services team including direct management of a set of Program Managers
  • Oversee the delivery of client services, evaluate and assess program impact, recommend program/policy changes, and direct program shifts and improvements
  • Advise on, and at times directly manage, challenging client situations in partnership with other Shelter services staff members
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Shelter and Data Team to develop and implement the tracking of process and outcome data for the Shelter services portfolio of programs, ensuring that programming is in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws as well as with all sources of government funding
  • Serve as a key member of the Senior Team, collaborating with colleagues in the development and monitoring of shelter program budgets and ensuring compliance with agency's purchasing and procurement policies
  • Participate in fundraising and cultivation events as an agency ambassador; work collaboratively with the Development Department to plan and execute quality volunteer activities
  • Represent Heading Home at external meetings such as regularly scheduled state and local meetings, and collaborate effectively with external community partners.
  • Adheres to all agency and program policies, procedures and rules.
  • Performs all other reasonable related duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Shelter

Work Environment

  • Office space within office building; prolonged sitting at a desk and working on a computer, OR, requires equal amounts of sitting and standing, must be able to climb stairs.Office is open to the public and visitors only by appointment. Position requires a minimum of four days onsite. Office is climate controlled with heat and air conditioning.
  • Must be able to occasionally ascend/descend stairs up to three or more sets, occasionally move equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required, Master’s Degree preferred. Lack of degree may be waived at the discretion of the VP of Operations
  • At least 5 -7 years of progressive management experience serving vulnerable populations
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills; adept at working with and relating to diverse constituents in a fast-paced, urgent environment
  • Demonstrated success managing reporting and compliance requirements for state and/or government-funded programs
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to function as an effective change agent.
  • Ability to negotiate and resolve differences in an unbiased manner.
  • Ability to be flexible, open and responsive to ongoing industry changes
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
