Hazelwood School District-JOB DESCRIPTION
English Learner (EL) Teacher (Kindergarten – Grade 12)
Reports to: Coordinator of EL, Immigrant and Migrant Education
JOB SUMMARY: The teacher for English learners (EL) provides leadership in Hazelwood schools by advocating for multilingual students and their families, and by working flexibly and collaboratively with the EL coordinator, EL team, classroom teachers and building administrators to facilitate English learners’ acquisition of academic and social language and academic learning targets.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Identification and assessment of English learners (EL)
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Enthusiastically collaborates with district and school registrars to provide a welcoming experience for multilingual students and their families enrolling in the district
  • Identifies potential ELs’ initial English language proficiency level for each language domain via the state approved WIDA Screener
  • Collects information in a timely manner about students’ families, languages, cultures, and educational backgrounds.
  • Administers the annual ACCESS for ELs state assessment of growth in English language proficiency, updating certifications in test administration annually
  • Facilitate English Learners’ acquisition of academic English and academic achievement.
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, and/or remedial instruction as to meet the needs of individual students capitalizing on the resources and experiences ELs bring to school to build and enrich their academic language
  • Develops daily language learning targets by analyzing language demands and identifying the language needed for functional use involved in grade-level teaching and learning
  • Provides opportunities for ELs of every proficiency level to engage in higher-order thinking
  • Works collaboratively with classroom teachers of ELs to create language-rich classroom environments and effectively communicate progress in English Language Development (ELD) with students and parents.
  • Monitors student achievement.
Examples of Work Performed:
  • Formatively assesses students’ linguistic, academic and social growth and maintains and updates English language development (ELD) portfolios;
  • Focuses on the developmental nature of language learning when applying up to date knowledge of individual ELs’ language proficiency to provide differentiated instructional supports to help scaffold content-based language learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
    Some examples of work performed:
  • Communicates rules and standards of behavior clearly via non-linguistic representations to ensure full comprehension, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Ensures that all communication to parents is in a language and manner they can understand.
  • Participates fully in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Education – Bachelor’s degree and a Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Teaching Certification. Missouri English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 Certification or ability to obtain temporary or provisional certification according to the state of Missouri rules.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the Missouri (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) standards, current ELD teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based on academic English proficiency levels. Ability to communicate effectively with multi-lingual, multi-cultural students and their parents/guardians. Proficiency in various EL program delivery models including pull-out ESOL, push-in, co-teaching, etc.
EXPERIENCE PREFERRED (NOT REQUIRED): Classroom teaching experience at the level assigned; Evidence of improving student acquisition of academic language and academic achievement; Training and practical experience in instructional management, content and language integrated curriculum development, implementation and evaluation. Knowledge of or willingness to get training in the ELD coaching service delivery model. Fluency in an additional language other than English is a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and focus, and depth perception. Specific hearing abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation, and isolating voices in multiple conversations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS: Works in a classroom environment a majority of the time.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
EQUIPMENT / TOOLS/ MATERIALS USED: Computer, copier, scanner, projector, telephone, calculator.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Assigned to 190 day work calendar; 36 hours and 40 minutes per week minimum; compensation and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) as provided by the Board of Education
