POSITION TITLE: Coordinator of Special Education
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
POSITION SUMMARY: The Coordinator of Special Education will assist the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services in coordinating and facilitating the daily operations of the district special education programs, including coordination with the Special School District as the district Liaison. The Coordinator of Special Education, will develop and nurture strategic alliances with the Special School District, ensuring alignment of educational goals and improved coordination between the districts. The role encompasses diverse leadership facets, ranging from strategic planning to operational oversight and fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration.
Essential Functions
  • Coordinates with the Special School District in all the processes for initial evaluation and identification of qualifying students requiring special education services and assists in the planning of Individual Educational Programs (IEP).
  • Advocates for FAPE in the Least Restrictive Environments for all students with appropriate support, including but not limited to staffing, minutes of special education, and appropriate skills instruction.
  • Acts as a liaison with the building administrator to ensure the implementation of the established IEP of an assigned student, including adaptations and modifications
  • Assists in coordinating, developing, monitoring, and evaluating the effectiveness of the systems and processes across the district in coordination with the Director of Special Education, SSD.
  • Provides thorough and timely reports, data, and information as requested regarding special education services
  • Consults with the appropriate school personnel directly responsible for the implementation of the IEP.
  • Acts as the LEA for Hazelwood in all Due Process, Child Complaint, and resolution meetings.
  • Assists with planning, implementing, and monitoring staff development and growth activities for staff members in the area of special education.
  • Leads professional development for administrators on topics of special education practices, processes, and compliance.
  • Coordinates and monitors services for students participating in district-wide special education classrooms and out-of-district placements.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of Board, Federal, and State Department policies and procedures for special education services.
  • Assists in monitoring and determining special education caseloads and schedules.
  • Assists in the developing and updating of supportive resources for staff as it relates to special education law and processes.
  • Attends all SSD meetings, roundtables, planning meetings and advocates for students in Hazelwood
  • Reviews and supports district administrators with data collection, behavior intervention plans, and manifestation hearings.
  • Coordinates all Disproportionality funds, including planning, staffing, and evaluating the effectiveness of identified plans.
  • Supervises and supports the district-wide Multi-Tiered Support Systems (MTSS) team to develop, implement, train, and assist schools/teachers in processes and systems.
  • Meets with the Director of Special Education weekly to facilitate program management, problem solve, determine best practices, and evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include concepts of grammar and punctuation; grant administration; community resources; district policies and procedures, District gifted learning requirements; age-appropriate activities; assessment instruments and techniques; community resources; codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; practices of personnel administration; and stages of child development.
ABILITY is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider several factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; building collaborative relationships; working with constant interruptions; accuracy and attention to detail; analyzing issues and determining appropriate course of action; displaying tact and courtesy; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; multitasking; organizing tasks; working as part of a team; working with detailed information/data; and working with frequent interruptions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; directing the use of budgeted funds within a work unit. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.
Experience: Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education (Minimum): Masters degree in job-related area (special education, special education administration)
Certification: Principal Certification K-12 Preferred, Special Education certification, Special Educators Administration certification preferred
