Harvard University is Hiring a Remote Director, Career Development and Talent Mobility

Position Description

The Career Development and Talent Mobility function is Harvard’s central strategic arm that designs, develops, implements, and supports inclusive, university-wide best practices around the development and mobility of internal talent at all levels of the organization. Reporting to the Managing Director of the Center for Workplace Development (CWD), and in close partnership with the HR Deans and Directors of all schools and units, the Director of Career Development and Talent Mobility is responsible for leading the design and implementation of career management programs and talent mobility initiatives across the university.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of career development professionals to achieve individual, team and organizational goals; set team strategy as well as performance goals and metrics.
  • Drive the design and implementation of an integrated, university-wide talent mobility strategy, including talent identification and succession planning efforts.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain effective career development and mobility programs, services and processes for workforce retention, development, and promotion of employees at all levels.
  • Partner with the Managing Director of Talent Acquisition and Outreach to ensure alignment of talent acquisition practices and the talent mobility strategy for internal and external candidates. Work closely with all HR leaders to ensure the talent mobility strategy, programs, processes, and tools meet organizational needs.
  • Ensure the quality and impact of current and future talent mobility cohort programs (i.e., Administrative Fellowship Program and Harvard Internal Professional Pathways Program) including optimal selection of candidates and assistance with job placement/progression post-program. Identify opportunities for new/additional approaches to support these populations and/or expand to new populations.
  • Partner with CWD leaders/peers to integrate learning and development programs and organization development practices with career development and talent mobility efforts.
  • Provide guidance and subject matter expertise regarding the development and implementation of career management frameworks for employees at all levels.
  • Establish mechanisms to measure ROI of career development and talent mobility efforts; provide periodic updates to HR and local leaders as needed.
  • Understand and apply learning frameworks (i.e., competencies, learning agility, etc.), resources and tools to support talent mobility strategies.
  • Stay abreast of career development, talent mobility, and recruitment best practices through active reading, research and professional relationships and networking; share knowledge with HR community as needed.
  • Represent HHR/CWD on university and external committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Coaching certification a plus.
  • Experience designing and implementing effective career development programming and resources for diverse employee populations.
  • Effectively able to build and maintain relationships and ability to lead others through change.
  • Proven capability for coaching, consulting, influencing and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to balance strategy and execution.
  • Ability to gain credibility with diverse constituencies.
  • Other professional experiences within HR a plus, e.g. organization development, HR consulting, etc.
  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving skills; can analyze data and draw insights to assess root causes and propose viable solutions.
  • Experience building consensus and integrating processes, policies and procedures across multiple decision-makers in a decentralized environment.
  • Proven track record of success and a strong focus on quality and customer service.
  • Strong knowledge of higher education culture.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to deal with immediate priorities while anticipating and planning for strategic future needs.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
