POSITION SUMMARY:

The Student Accessibility and Assistive Technology Specialist works directly with students and staff to develop, implement, and monitor Assistive Technology Services. The Specialist provides evaluation, modeling, and training to staff and students on a full continuum of communication and technology supports. The Specialist functions as a diagnostic team member and provides ongoing technical assistance to students, staff, and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. At minimum of 5 years of experience in assistive technology, speech and language, special education, or other related degree.
  2. Experience in using assistive technology for the purpose of student access.
  3. Graduate of an accredited college/university and holds or eligible for a Virginia Teaching license with endorsement in Special Education or related field (Virginia Postgraduate Professional license and Masters degree preferred).
  4. RESNA certified preferred.
  5. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  6. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  9. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  10. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Select, adapt, and conduct appropriate assistive technology evaluations to assess student’s needs across all domains
  2. Interpret, integrate, and synthesize evaluative information to make recommendations for Assistive Technology interventions, services, and programming for the purpose of providing access to instruction.
  3. Evaluate and make recommendations for augmentative communication systems and assistive technologies for the purpose of identifying appropriate tools/devices.
  4. Design, instruct, and support assistive technology programming to students and staff to access curriculum.
  5. Collaborate with staff to share information and expertise to plan and implement effective student programs for the purpose of developing and implementing assistive technology services.
  6. Track student use of assistive technology and collect data for purpose of effectiveness.
  7. Select, adapt, and conduct appropriate evaluations to assess communication across all domains.
  8. Promote the development of language rich environments through the use of low to high technology systems for the purpose of fostering communication across settings.
  9. Participate as needed, as a member of a multidisciplinary team to develop recommendations based on individual student needs.
  10. Participate as needed in IEP meetings for students who qualify for AT supports.
  11. Participate in professional growth activities on a yearly basis.
  12. Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data.
  13. Participate in building activities and meetings as appropriate.
  14. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  15. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  16. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  17. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  18. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  19. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  20. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Director of Special Education.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
