Shelter Medical Care Coordinator Overview:

Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Manager, the Medical Care Coordinator is responsible for oversight and coordination of medical services and medications for youth in care. The Medical Care Coordinator administers prescribed medications to youth and maintains related medical records. The position is responsible for accepting medications that come with the youth, maintaining an adequate supply throughout their stay, arranging for all medical needs in coordination with parents and caseworkers, and completing all follow-up medical requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitors medications to ensure adequate accountability measures are taken when medications are ordered, received into the facility, administered, and at a change of shift as required by policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Administers and accurately records the administration of medications for residents as prescribed by the physician in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Reports operational needs of medication room.

  • Verifies the identity of the youth receiving medication and records the name of the drug, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms or records.

  • Presents medication to youth and observes ingestion or other application, or administers medication using specified procedures, and documents reasons why prescribed drugs are not administered.

  • Observes, records, and reports to the supervisor or administrator the symptoms and conditions of youths that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, or medication side effects.

  • Provides and promotes youth’s rights during the administration of medications.

  • Stores medications in a safe and accurate manner in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Position will intervene when youth are engaging in behaviors that are contrary to program rules and encourages youth to comply with program rules in a non-confrontational manner.

  • Utilizes the behavior management program as a teaching tool.

  • Establishes and maintains relationships with health care providers.

  • Documents all incidents involving youth accidents, injuries, illness, signs of emotional distress, visitors, medications, and other information in the EVOLV system.

  • Transports youth when necessary.

  • Reports child abuse allegations and emotional or physical abuse of a child according to minimum standards and Kinder Shelter policy and procedures.

  • Attends staff meetings, mandatory trainings and maintains annual training hours required by licensing.

  • Provides a safe environment for all youth and staff in the shelter.

  • Completes all data entry and paperwork assigned.

  • Completes progress notes for each youth and notes all pertinent information in the youth's file.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required in Social Science, e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Criminology, or closely related fields.

Experience:

  • One (1) year of continuous work experience with youth in a residential, recreational, or educational setting.

  • Training and experience using a personal computer with a variety of software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Case Management Software.

Licensure:

  • Reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license (Texas) and auto liability insurance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The applicant will be required to complete psychotropic medication training, medical consent training for caregivers, crisis prevention intervention, first aid, and CPR training. within 90 days of employment.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule when necessary.

  • Knowledge of medications and side effects.

  • Able to utilize CPI techniques.

  • Ability to coordinate medical and behavioral health needs.

  • Skill in emphasizing, valuing, and dealing successfully with the special capabilities, distinctive cultural histories, and unique needs of people of various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

  • Must have good written and oral communication skills.

  • Be self-discipline and dependable.

  • Meets deadlines to complete projects and assignments.

  • Multitask and work independently.

  • Maintains the highest standards of ethical behavior, exercising honesty and integrity, respect, confidentiality, and fairness in the execution of their official responsibilities.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-time | Tuesday - Friday 10:00 am- 6:00 pm. | Saturday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm (Off Sunday & Monday)

Salary:

  • $39,520.00-$48,880.00 (Annually)

  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
