Hall County is Hiring a Marshal - Sergeant Near Gainesville, GA

JOB SUMMARY:

Assist the Marshal’s Office Captain in coordinating work for subordinate officers who serve as the enforcement arm for department directors who may not have a means of enforcement available to assure all ordinances passed by the County Commission are implemented. Also supervises any non-certified security staff assigned to the Marshal’s Office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the Marshal’s Office Captain in all aspects of direction of the department; performs the duties of the Captain when he is not present. 

Supervises subordinate staff, schedules, assigns and directs work; conducts interviews; hires and orients new employees; oversees or conducts training, coaches; evaluates and appraises, addresses complaints and resolves problems; and ensures quality of work.

Organizes and plans the work functions of the shifts, including proactive enforcement and sweeps.

Enforces all state and local laws as well as county ordinances concentrating on areas including traffic control, tax commissioner’s office, environmental health, housing and zoning ordinances, business licenses, and beer and wine distribution permits; performs patrol to discover violations.

Investigates, issues citations, and apprehends suspects when violations are found; works in both uniform and plain clothes to conduct investigations; assists other agencies. 

Develops and implements Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); keeps abreast of current State and Federal law and effects changes to Standard Operating Procedures as needed.

Compiles and analyzes activity reports, prepares weekly/monthly reports, and reviews weekly activity logs to assure work quality of the enforcement officers. 

Assigns cases, oversees work, provides necessary directions, reviews cases to insure completion.

Coordinate joint department operations with Animal Control, Fire Department, Building Inspections, and any other departments that request enforcement assistance. 

Refers cases to appropriate departments upon observing or receiving complaint of violations.

Counsel the public who are found in violation of the laws; reviews / audits cases before turning over to the Solicitors Office/District Attorney for prosecution; testifies before the Grand jury or in court as necessary.

Provide law enforcement support at special events as necessary.

Performs other related duties as required.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Three years of experience in law enforcement preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

POST Certification.

Valid Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

POST Supervisor Training Levels I, II and III preferred or able to obtain training within 1 year.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the principles and techniques involved in investigations.

Knowledge of county geography and the location of all roads and streets.

Ability to analyze situations quickly and effectively and to determine the proper course of action.

Ability to cope with situations firmly, tactfully, courteously, and with respect for the rights of others.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Skill in the use of firearms.

Essential functions occasionally require incumbents to use math/calculations.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are continuously performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather; extreme hot or cold temperatures; humidity and moisture. Incumbents must continuously be able to work with others.

Essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from biological hazards and sharp objects/tools; dirt/mud; extreme dry environments; fumes/gasses/odors/dust; vibration; and wet, slippery floors/surfaces. Incumbents must frequently be able to work alone.

Essential functions are occasionally performed with exposure to hazards including chemical, electrical, radiation, and sharp objects/tools; risk of bodily injury from failing from high heights/high places; constricted spaces; grease/oil; moving mechanical parts; extreme noise; and hot temperature devices including flame torches and burners.

Incumbents regularly must be able to work around equipment/machinery; drive county vehicles and other equipment; and walk on uneven ground.
