Hachette Book Group is Hiring a Junior Designer, Basic Books Near New York, NY

SUMMARY:
The Basic Books / Seal Press / Public Affairs / Bold Type Books Group seeks a creative and ambitious Junior Designer to assist the Creative Director and Designer with all tasks relating to design and production of approximately 70 titles per year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Designing and formatting flaps/back ads for both hardcover and paperback titles
  • Ensuring all covers are uploaded onto proprietary database
  • Responsible for researching/commissioning art and photos, as well as handling billing and invoices
  • Work closely with audio book department to convert Basic Books Seal Press / Public Affairs / Bold Type Books Group covers to audio book format.
  • Organize and archive both digital and physical files
  • Mechanical routing maintenance and scheduling
  • Working with designer on other art department needs (database updates, spreadsheet updates upkeep of filing, etc.)
  • Follow up with vendors on billing (purchase of stock photography, commissioned art, etc.)
  • Attending jacket concept/title meetings pending completion of other job requirements
  • Designing some Publicity and Marketing materials (ads, catalogs, galleys, etc.)
  • Possibility of designing jackets (depending on level of candidate)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Creative Director
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree in art/design preferred
  • Open to entry-level candidates; 1-2 years of experience in publishing art department preferred; interest in nonfiction books required.
  • Must be proficient in Macintosh operating systems: InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Working knowledge of PowerPoint a plus, but not necessary
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively

The compensation range for this position is $53,200. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
