Habitat for Humanity of Omaha is Hiring a Construction Intern Near Omaha, NE

Description

$15.00 per hour

The Construction Internship will provide the incumbent the opportunity to utilize constructions skills, increase current experience levels, and contribute to a great organization while partnering with incredible people! From demolition to framing to finish carpentry and landscaping, the Construction Intern will not only be building homes, but s/he will have the opportunity to enhance leadership abilities as the Intern guides volunteers and future home owners involved in the build. Safety is key, so providing education and monitoring the work being done will be expected. Maintenance of the overall project from set up, through utilization of tools and materials, as well as clean-up and tracking of the progress made at the site will be the responsibility of the Construction Intern. If selected for the internship, it may also set the stage for a future position with Habitat for Humanity – Omaha. 

Requirements

Responsibilities of the position:

  • Provides hands-on assistance with construction tasks including, but not limited to, demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping. Projects may include new and gut rehab homes, as well as Critical Home Repair (CHR) and weatherization projects.
  • Leads small groups of volunteers, ensuring that they have meaningful tasks and learning about Habitat programs and build process while on the work sites.
  • Uses volunteer management techniques to facilitate positive experiences for volunteers and family participants working on site.
  • Collaborates with construction staff to identify skilled/enthusiastic volunteers and cultivate their continued involvement with Habitat.
  • Maintains site safety through modeling of safety practices and guidelines, volunteer education, and site monitoring;
  • Reports any safety of policy violations to management team immediately.
  • Completes safety trainings with construction team.
  • Provides on-site orientations and safety talks to groups of volunteers and family participants, as directed.
  • Assists team with materials management on site and at the Habitat warehouse and storage trailers.
  • Maintains and organizes materials and tools needed for projects.
  • Set up and cleanup project sites.
  • Maintains site logs (Builder Trend or other designated method) for each project completed.)
  • Participates in regular planning and debriefing meetings as needed.
  • On occasion, member may participate in larger community projects such as lot clean ups, community gardens, etc.
  • May be directed to assist the Property Maintenance Manager as needed.

Requirements 

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills required:

  • Basic experience with Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Experience working as a member of a team
  • Experience with power tools, preferred
  • Experience working with volunteers or teaching/group facilitation experience, preferred
  • Knowledge of community development practices, preferred

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to walk, climb, kneel, reach, stand, for long periods of time on rough and uneven terrain
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Ability to work on ladders and heights of up to two-stories
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions – including prolonged exposure to seasonal elements of heat and cold
