Who We are as a TribeThe Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake is a federally-recognized native sovereign nation. Our primary purposes relate to the overall wellbeing of our Tribal Members and our families. We have active programs and relationships with our Pomo tribal neighbors in Lake County California that will help us preserve our Pomo culture. Many of these activities help us rediscover lost traditions, spiritual beliefs and help revive our dying languages. Because we know that the world is a different place than when our ancestors were here, our Tribe works very hard to learn different ways of achieving economic self-sufficiency. We engage in a variety of economic development strategies which would not only benefit our families but also our neighbors. Purpose of the PositionThe Work Crew Team Lead will train and serve as technical lead for the work of the Work Crew. This role will perform, and direct basic labor-oriented tasks and projects as identified by Tribal Administration. The Work Crew Team Lead will provide basic manual labor services for the Tribe and its membership, while providing a foundation for locating and retaining gainful employment for participants. The role of the Work Crew Team Lead is responsible for the management and upkeep of HPUL Cemetery and other designated Tribal community properties.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and provide requested services to the Tribe.
  • Educate crew in the work ethics and best practices while leading by example.
  • Provide technical direction and participate in crew activities.
  • Transport crew to and from work locations via assigned vehicle; operate and maintain assigned vehicle.
  • Train crew and adhere to safety procedures and guidelines for assigned tasks.
  • Ensure crew members receive all required training.
  • Prepare work task schedules and ensure work is performed in accordance with the established schedules on all shifts.
  • Assign and inspect the work of crew.
  • Perform basic yard work and/or maintenance for the Tribe and its members.
  • Plan, organize, and execute community clean-ups.
  • Responsible for Fire Hazard Mitigation.
  • Responsible for beautification and maintenance of tribally owned property.
  • Maintain and track the burial plot map.
  • Assist the Administration with Cemetery Ordinance Compliance.
  • Provide tools and/or assistance for burial to Tribal Member families as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Required:

  • High School Diploma, general education degree (GED), or a minimum of two (2) or more years of comparable work experience in lieu of education AND two (2) years performing Work Crew Laborer work in support of the Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake Tribe or other similar governmental or commercial organization. PLUS:
    • Ability to successfully complete pre-employment Skill Assessment to evaluate the following areas:
      • Basic computer skills.
      • Basic math skills.
      • Measuring tape/ruler skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of outside tools (rake, shovel, hoe, sheers, etc.) and the safe use of power tools such as weed eaters, chainsaws, and other maintenance-related equipment.
  • All offers are contingent upon signing a confidentiality agreement and satisfactory completion of drug screening and background checks. Employer observes federal standards for controlled substances.
  • Required to possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that is satisfactory to the Tribe’s insurance carrier.

This position requires the physical agility to access cultural sites in diverse terrain. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk, including in-office and on-job-site locations. Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch frequently, and crawl occasionally.

The employee is also regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel work-related items. Must have sufficient hand-eye coordination and hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp items as needed. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Visual acuity to operate equipment and read technical and safety information is a must.

Position requires the ability to manipulate (i.e., lift, carry, and move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds on a regular basis and over 50 pounds on an occasional basis. Requires the ability to perform heavy manual labor, occasionally in extreme weather conditions.
