H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center is Hiring a Manager, Cytology Laboratory Near Tampa, FL

Consistently ranked in U.S. News & World Report “Best Cancer Hospitals” for the past nine years, Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute is a free-standing, not-for-profit cancer center. Moffitt opened on the campus of Tampa’s University of South Florida in October 1986 and became Florida’s only NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2001. There is vast opportunity within our framework for information technology, scientific research, clinical treatment and quality of life studies, as we see over 15,000 new cancer patients each year. In addition, Moffitt’s new 10-story hospital that will expand state-of-the-art surgical services for the thousands of patients needing highly complex surgeries and related inpatient care each year. McKinley Hospital features Outpatient surgical and diagnostic imaging programs complementing our current outpatient surgical practice at the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Outpatient Center across the street and our inpatient and clinical operations on the Magnolia campus. Opening the surgical hospital directly impacts Moffitt’s ability to expand services at our Magnolia campus, alleviates space constraints for patient care and opens more space for vital cancer research. Together, we will provide patients and families with a wide range of sophisticated services and comforting spaces in addition to those provided at the nearby founding campus.
The Manager of Cytology, working under the direction of the Administrative Director of Anatomic Pathology, provides leadership and oversight of the Cytology department. The manager serves as the resource for coordination of research projects, test validation, and clinical test implementation activities in the department. Duties for this position include management of daily operations, personnel management, budgetary/fiscal responsibilities, research project management, quality assurance and assessment, regulatory and billing compliance, ensuring accurate design of LIS and IT processes, and coordination of projects and shared interdepartmental activities. The manager also serves as the department's liaison or internal consultant for both inpatient and outpatient areas of the organization. The laboratory manager relies on experience and sound independent judgment to formulate strategic goals and be able to resolve day-to-day operational issues. Emphasis is placed on high quality patient care, operational efficiency, meeting established turnaround times, and meeting budget targets.
Credentials and Qualifications:
  • BA, BS degree required, MA preferred. Florida State license at supervisor level within Cytology required. ASCP technologist licensure preferred within Cytology.
  • Minimum of five years relevant Cytology laboratory operations experience at the laboratory manager and/or supervisory level.
  • Minimum of five years' experience at the Cytotechnologist/Cytologist level prior to management/supervisory experience.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of specialty as it relates to test validation, performance, QC, and QA activities. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all applicable laboratory regulations, preferred experience/knowledge with standards in other states requiring laboratory licensure i.e. New York State.
  • Conveys a high degree of poise, professionalism, and emotional maturity when working through complex initiatives that often have conflicting priorities or objectives. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of personality types. Ability to be self-directed, proactive, and work independently.
The Cytology Department at Moffitt Cancer Center is a very busy and fast paced laboratory. This department supports collection, handling and adequacy assessments of FNA and core biopsies collected in multiple areas of the hospital across all Moffitt locations to include Moffitt Magnolia Campus (MCC), Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Clinic (MKC) and Moffitt McKinley Hospital (MMH). Annually this department processes approximately 15,000 cases consisting largely of Fine Needle Aspirations and Non-GYN Cytology specimens. Also, in order to support Clinical and Research needs of the Center, this department provides onsite support as needed for research collections.
