Pathologist Assistant Lead – Frozen Room/Gross Room, Pathology Services

Job Summary:

• The Pathologist Assistant Lead provides pathology services under the direction of the attending pathologists. Primary duties center on the practice of pathology and involve assisting in the procurement and processing of surgical pathology specimens.
• This position is responsible for leading and mentoring the grossing room personnel (PAs and Lab Assistants) and the day to day oversight over busy Gross Room operations at both MCC and MKC. This includes specimen receipt and accessioning, grossing, frozen sections, intra-operative consultations, autopsy service, equipment maintenance, touch imprint preparation, tissue banking, sterile collections, and targeted research collections. Assists the pathologists with resident/ fellow orientation and training. Will have daily interactions with pathologists, pathology staff, surgeons, nurses, residents, and fellows.
• In the absence of the PA Supervisor, the lead will assist in administrative duties which include assigning cases to the PAs, adjustments of the PA schedule when necessary, and overseeing the daily operations of the gross room/frozen room at both MCC and MKC

The Ideal Candidate:

• Demonstrates a high degree of technical competence, intrapersonal skills, attention to detail, independent critical thinking, and decision making;
• Prior experience as a team lead in a clinical setting.
• Possesses regulatory knowledge of state, federal, TJC, and CAP standards, as well as laboratory LIS systems.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for preparation of tissue for surgical specimen dissection, follow guidelines set for appropriate gross examination and submission for routine processing, and/or special procedures.
• Selects and prepares tissue for intraoperative frozen section and/or touch imprint interpretation.
• Collaborates with Tissue Core personnel to procure research specimens.
• Provides day to day oversight of staff and activities within the laboratory to ensure that quality and regulatory requirements are met, and test results are reported within defined turn-around-times.
• Maintains department operations in compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards, updating policies and processes to comply with new requirements as needed and verifying accuracy of reporting with the LIS/HIS.
• Assists Supervisor with orientation and instruction of new personnel in procedures, techniques, policies, safety, and processes.
• Performs computer functions necessary in LIS and LIMS to process specimens from accessioning to processing of specimens.

Credentials and Qualifications:

• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the clinical laboratory setting as a Pathologist Assistant.
• ASCP Certification required. (Certification may be waived in lieu of >5 years’ experience in an oncology hospital setting).
• Bachelor's Degree preferably in Life/Laboratory Sciences required.
• Knowledge of clinical laboratory processes and workflow, experience with laboratory information systems and voice dictation systems required.
• Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot technical problems, work independently, and adapt positively to change required.
• Experience in an academic oncology hospital setting preferred.
• AAPA Certification preferred.
• Prior experience as a team lead in a clinical setting preferred.
• Regulatory knowledge of state, federal, TJC, and CAP standards preferred.
• Master's Degree in a Pathologist Assistant program preferred.
