  • Job Title: Phlebotomist / Certified Nurse Assistant with Phlebotomy Certificate
  • Location: Galveston & Brazoria Counties
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
  • Working Status: Full Time with Benefits
REQUIRES at least 2 yeas phlebotomy experience
Position Summary: 
Phlebotomist / CNA Phlebotomist to float between all Galveston & Brazoria County Behavioral Health service sites (primarily adult services). Each clinic has specific lab days. Will perform lab testing / specimen collection in the morning and provide support to nursing/medical operations in the afternoon. Interacts directly with patients, performing medical-related tasks to support the clinic's daily operation. Serves as a vital link between patients, nurses, and other facility staff. Support patients as they self-navigate outpatient pharmacological management service delivery. Assists in preparing electronic health record to include documentation of vital health indicators as well as completion of required patient consents and other documentation as assigned/delegated. Provides referral resources when directed from nursing team. Provides daily support to nurses, prescribing providers, and other clinicians, ensuring the delivery of high-quality behavioral health care services. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with necessary regulatory standards and licensure requirements mandates.
Job Duties:
  • Perform venipunctures and specimen collection (urine), process medical laboratory tests and prepare for transport; follow all CLIA requirements and regulations; order and maintain adequate laboratory supplies; clean & maintain lab area including equipment.
  • Within scope, serve as back up for nursing team members as needed by controlling patient flow.
  • Obtain and record vital signs accurately within the electronic health record. Report information to prescribing professional per policy to assure any medical concerns are addressed immediately.
  • Assists nursing team by preparing the medical record as necessary (required forms and other documentation).
  • Provide an assertive approach to establishing individualized continuity of care specific to medical and psychiatric services. Provide follow-along services to assure necessary linkage to service occurred. Report gaps in services or lack of continuity to team to assure individualized plan of action is developed.
  • If assigned, and within scope, retrieves patient phone calls for follow-up by licensed medical staff.
  • Provide assistance with scheduling of laboratory testing and other appointments as needed. Issues appointment cards and performs courtesy appointment reminder calls when directed.
  • Effectively communicates with assigned team members, collaborative agency members, and leadership staff regarding service delivery, continuity of care as appropriate.
  • Actively participates in clinic team meetings/morning huddles and other clinical meetings as directed. Attends and actively participates in quarterly behavioral health medical services meetings.
  • Conducts service delivery in accordance with program standards as defined by agency, agency collaboration, and program.
  • Assures same day completion of all medical-related documentation, as well as other forms required by program policy are completed accurately and with clarity.
  • With training, and if requested, facilitates telemedicine appointments, and ensures that all necessary documentation (consents, progress notes, surveys, etc) is completed. Communicates with IHC Nurse Manager, onsite Program Manager or nursing personnel of any issues, concerns, technical difficulties during telemedicine sessions.
  • Completes all assignments within a time frame negotiated with the supervisor.
  • Arrives at designated time and departs according to schedule. Maintains a willingness to adjust schedule to meet the needs of the situation. Makes every attempt to pre-schedule absences and provide dependable coverage and service. Complies with the Center's policies regarding leave usage, absenteeism, and tardiness.
  • Displays professionalism when representing program throughout daily operations.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding clients, records, personnel, and other confidential information in order to comply with Center, state, and federal policy.
  • Establishes baseline data and assists with tracking vital health indicators as part of CCBHC outcome measures.
  • Strictly adheres to the professional, ethical, and legal requirements set forth in GCC's Business Code of Conduct, as well as the Corporate Compliance Plan. Consistent adherence to the Center's Dress Code.
  • Acknowledges annually and demonstrates understanding of the Center's Medication Policies & Procedures to include the delegation of certain medical & nursing acts to unlicensed staff as outlined in the P&P.
  • Maintains current status of all required trainings as directed by GCC.
  • Ensures certification remains current as required.
  • Assists supervisor and/or CNO as requested to complete special projects.
Supervision: Registered Nurse, IHC Nurse Manager
Required Education:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
  • MUST hold current phlebotomy certificate.
  • Completion of a state-approved CNA certification training course is preferred.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with electronic health record charting.
  • CPR & Basic First Aid training.
Training & Experience:
  • REQUIRES at least 2 yeas phlebotomy experience
  • Experience in a behavioral health care setting is preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, staff, peers, and patients.
  • Must have skills in providing professional effective communication over the telephone and in the office with composure and compassion;
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Teamwork is essential.
  • Must be well organized and utilize effective time management.
Working Conditions:
  • Office / Outpatient Clinic work environment; Direct service; will require travel between clinics in both Galveston & Brazoria County.
  • Must maintain a safe driving record to ensure continued coverage under the Center's insurance carrier. 
  • Must have reliable transportation, maintain current/valid Texas driver's license; must have driving record insurable by the Center's insurance administrator; must adhere to the GCC Driver Policy.
Physical Requirements:
  • Requirements of the job/work site/environmental conditions include walking, operating office equipment, sitting, carry/lift loads up to 20 pounds, potential occupational exposure to blood or other potential infectious material.
  • Satori Alternative to Managing Aggression (SAMA), CPR, First Aid, & Defensive Driving training modules.
  • Must have fine motor skills for legible writing, clinical documentation in EHR, and will need to drive motor vehicle while conducting business travel.

  • Must hold current phlebotomy certificate.
