A unique and exciting opportunity to join the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs to prepare meals for students who are staying at our Campus while they learn to work with their guide or service dog.
The cook will work Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00 AM -6:30 PM when class is scheduled. A copy of the class schedule will be provided during the interview process.
There is also the opportunity to join the organization as a substitute cook, picking up shifts when additional support is needed.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of our Chef, the cook prepares breakfast, lunch and dinner for guide or service dog students and/or other guests staying on our campus (6 to 12 student on average at each meal).
Ensures food safety while maintaining a healthy, clean and safe work area and dining room. Cleans up after meals. Follows the menu to ensure specific dietary requirements are met.
KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma. Culinary or Nutrition/Dietician courses preferred.
- Must maintain Food Manager Certification from Suffolk County Board of Health.
- Must be comfortable around dogs.
- Must have good communications skills, reliable and be capable of learning, applying courtesy and etiquette to the blind, visually impaired and to others with disabilities.
HOURS:
Friday and Saturday shift on an intermittent schedule. The work day begins at 6:00 AM for breakfast preparation. Breakfast is served around 7:30 AM. Lunch is served at 12:00 PM. Dinner is served around 5:30 PM. The work day will end around 6:30 PM after dinner has been served and the kitchen and dining area are clean.
