Position Summary:

The Wattenberg lab in theDepartment of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Virginia CommonwealthUniversity School of Medicine, has openings for a postdoctoral scientist tostudy the role of regulation of sphingolipid biosynthesis in production ofmyelin in the central nervous system. To study these, we utilize in vivo mousegenetics, confocal microscopy, lipid analysis, enzymatic assays, electronmicroscopy, protein biochemistry, and manipulation of genes, cell cultures andstate-of-the-art biochemical and molecular approaches. We offer anintellectual, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research environment tosupport career goals and provide access to modern facilities. Candidates withbackground knowledge and hands-on experience in biochemistry, molecularbiology, mouse genetics, confocal and electron microscopy, and proteinbiochemistry as well computational skills in genetic analysis and proteinstructure will be considered. Skills in sphingolipid biology are particularlywelcome.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

  • Strongresearch background in sphingolipids, cell biology, molecular biology, and or mousemodels
  • Hands-onexperience in biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics, confocal andelectron microscopy, and protein biochemistry as well computational skills ingenetic analysis and protein structure
  • Evidenceof successful completion of a research project (publications)
  • Abilityto work independently; interpret, present, and discuss experimental data
  • Excellentcommunications skills
  • Thiswill be a minimum one-year appointment, contingent upon satisfactory annualreviews
  • Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhDor MD/PhD (or equivalent) in biological sciences
  • Preferredexperience in sphingolipid biology
